University adds swimming and diving as 2021-22 intercollegiate sport

Seven HCAC schools will offer the the sport

Bluffton University will add swimming and diving as an intercollegiate sport for the 2021-22 academic year.

The Beavers are an NCAA DIII school and compete as part of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference. With Bluffton’s addition of men’s and women’s swimming and diving, seven schools in the HCAC will offer the sport.

Jerry Cupples was re-elected president of Bluffton council for 2021 at the Jan. 11 reorganizational meeting of council.

Mayor Richard Johnson told the Icon that council committees would remain unchanged from last year. Those committees follow:

David Smucker's story  - click here to read it - brings to mind Rog Edwards story about he and Ralf Steiner and some others riding around setting off fire crackers when Ralf who was driving, lit a big one, and threw it out the window.  Only the window was closed.  That's was the end of the story.  Rog said the explosion did no damage but was very loud.

Pre-season men's HCAC basketball poll

With the 2020-21 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) men’s basketball season set to officially tip-off this weekend, in a vote amongst league coaches, Transylvania University was selected to repeat as league-leaders in the 2021 season. 

The Pioneers picked up 80 votes to claim the first place slot. Not far behind, Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology was picked to finish second with 71 points with Franklin College (64), Hanover College (62) and Anderson University (54) rounding out the top five respectively. 

Library board announces 2021 meeting schedule

The boad of trustees of Bluffton Public Library has announced its meeting schedle for 2021.

Meetings will be held on the fourth Tuesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. in the library's Board Room at 145 S. Main St., Bluffton, or virtually as needed.  No meetings will take place in July or December.

 Board members are Elizabeth Hostetler, president; Bob Beer, vice president; Carrie Phillips, secretary; Amy Lehman Mikesell, Robert Scott, Emily VonStein, and Nancy Yeager. 

 Board meetings are open to the public.
