Bluffton University visit moves U.S. Poet Laureate

United States Poet Laureate Natasha Trethewey may have taken the first step toward understanding her mother in Bluffton, Ohio.

She said as much following an Oct. 15 lecture at Bluffton University, where her late mother, Gwendolyn Ann Turnbough, attended college for one year 50 years ago.

Oct. 26 public auction of 58 acres in Orange Township

Farthing Real Estate and Auctioneers, Findlay, announce the sale of four parcels at public auction at 10 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 26, on the premises at 3576 and 3598 State Route 103, Bluffton.

The property includes 58 acres of farm ground and woods, two homes and buildings, farm equipment and personal property.

The owners are james and Imogene Benroth and Judith Houdeshell.

Fall planting sale going on at New Leaf

New Leaf Landscape Garden Center, 0395 State Route 235 north of Ada, has a fall planting sale going on.

The sale includes 25 to 50 percent of all potted shade and flowering trees and specially marked balled and burlap flowering shade and evergreens.

Selected container grown shrubs and evergreens are 25 to 50 percent off. Ornamental grasses are 25 percent off.

Tea roses and fruit plants and water garden plants are 50 percent off. The greenhouse has a clearance area including arbors, trellis, pots and other items.

Two movies this week at Shannon Theatre

Starting Friday, October 18 and running through Thursday, October 24 Shannon Theatre will be showing two films.

Instructions Not Included (PG-13) is playing every evening at 7 p.m. with Saturday and Sunday matinees at 1:30 p.m. and 4 p.m.

The Family (R) is playing every evening at 9:30 p.m. only.

Shirley's Gourmet Popcorn flavors of the month for October are Red Hot Cinnamon and S'mores.

Historical Bluffton: Dick Cookson Marathon distributor

If you need Marathon fuel oil to heat your house, call Dick Cookson at 358-2871 (never mind the 419). His "metered service" was located along State Route 103 across from the National Quarry and between the railroad tracks and Riley Creek.  He sold Marathon products.

The Garvers of Ada - masters of furniture upholstery

The Garver brothers of Ada have upholstered nearly every thing imaginable since opening Fine Touch Furniture and Upholstery. This fact is well known by many of their Bluffton customers.

The 513 N. Johnson St., Ada, business, opened in 1986 after brothers Randy and Dan Garver left Findlay Furniture, where they learned the upholstery trade.
