Bluffton 4th of July 1915

Here's a Bluffton photo from what is believed to be a 1915 Fourth of July parade.

We base that upon the year of the vehicles in the photo, the bricked Church Street and the Russell Hotel on the left. The hotel burned to the ground in 1919. A very close examination of the license plates shows a "5."  We also take into consideration the style of the dresses worn by the women walking toward Main Street.

Rick Emmert: "In the midst of that halftime show suddenly my right hand drumstick broke"

Rick Emmert writes:

In the fall of 1964, I was a lowly freshman in high school playing saxophone in Miss Souder’s marching band, the product of her initiative from the previous year, which we affectionately called “sax lessons” to train some of the clarinet players to play saxophone during the fall marching band season to give the band a stronger sound.

The tournament must go on

The Byers family canceled Thanksgiving this year, canceled Christmas, cancel the 21st annual Byers/Clum ping pong tournament and had had enough! "We rented BFR on New Year’s Day, did not share food, attempted to be socially distant, kept our masks on, and completed our ping-pong tournament (Adam was the 2020 winner) as well as just enjoyed each other in a safe larger setting," Tim told the Icon. Ralph Locher - also was a member of the Ohio State Supreme Court

There are several, and this winter this series will identify many of them.

The first is Ralph Locher, a 1932 Bluffton High School graduate, who eventually became mayor of Cleveland and later a member of the Ohio State Supreme Court.

He also served on the Board of Trustees of Bluffton College and is a member of its athletic hall of fame.

Here’s his story:
He was born on July 24, 1915, in Romania to Ephraim and Natalie (Voight) Locher.
