ArtSpace/Lima has two-evening show by Phil Sugden

ArtSpace/Lima will have a two-night showing of Phil Sugden’s installation, Pages from the Manual on Dismantling God, Friday, Feb. 21 and Saturday, Feb. 22, from 6 - 9 p.m., in its Ellen Nelson Gallery.

Phil Sugden is Assistant Professor of Art at Bluffton University. His work has been exhibited in more than 90 solo and 130 group shows internationally, including galleries and museums in New York, Los Angeles, London, Paris, Washington, D.C., Melbourne, and Kathmandu.

Weaver: God's actions rooted in nonviolence

Many people believe the Old Testament is a showcase of God’s wrath—from the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, the death of Egyptian firstborns and the seizure of Jericho, for example—but that is not the whole picture of the Old Testament, nor a proper view of God, says Dr. J. Denny Weaver, professor emeritus of religion at Bluffton University.

Lecture: Social work in today's economy

Arvis Averette, social work coordinator at the Chicago Center for Urban Life and Culture, will discuss “The Economics of 2014 and the BSW Social Work Programs’ Reaction to Its Implications” in a Bluffton University forum on Tuesday, Feb. 25.

This year’s Smucker Lecture in social work at Bluffton, the presentation will begin at 11 a.m. in Founders Hall. It is free and open to the public.

Masterworks concert and competition Feb. 23

Composer Ola Gjeilo’s “Sunrise Mass” and high school seniors vying for music scholarships will be featured at Bluffton University’s Masterworks Concert on Sunday, Feb. 23, in Yoder Recital Hall. Admission to the 2:30 p.m. concert is free; a free-will offering will be taken to help defray concert expenses.

Dr. Mark J. Suderman, professor of music, will conduct the University Chorale, the Bluffton Choral Society and a community chamber orchestra in their performance of “Sunrise Mass.”

Bluffton council meets Monday at 8 p.m. The village anticipates entering into a contract with the Ohio Department of Transportation for a bridge inspection program.
