University faculty piano recital Feb. 27

Bluffton University’s newest music department member will perform a recital at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 27,  in Yoder Recital Hall.

Dr. Da Eun Choi, staff accompanist and piano instructor, will perform solo piano pieces as part of Bluffton’s Thursdays at Yoder program. Choi earned her DMA from the University of Texas at Austin. 

She will perform demanding and difficult keyboard works, including: Wanderer Fantasy in C major, D. 760 by Franz Schubert, Gaspard de la nuit by Maurice Ravel and Danse Macabre, Op. 40/S. 555 by Camille Saint-Saëns (Arr. Franz Liszt).

"Now Papa..." said Mama Bear

A salute to the Berenstain Bears books

I have been known to quote Mama Bear from the Berenstain Bears books.

Not only is she always calm, collected and right (sorry daddies), but she speaks some great pearls of wisdom. She also knows when NOT to speak or intervene, allowing her cubs (or Papa) to learn for themselves.

I quote Mama Bear when I’m instructing my children about tattletales: “Tattling is telling just to be mean” according to Mama Bear, and she goes on to explain that telling on someone because you’re worried about them is different from tattling.

$114 million Findlay I-75 project in final year

Expected to be completed late this fall

Despite heavy rainfall early in the year, the reconstruction and expansion of Interstate 75 through Findlay and Hancock County still hit major milestones in 2019 to keep the project on track.

The $114 million project is in its fourth and final year and is expected to be completed late this fall.

“The way we phased the work last year, plus a mild winter so far this year, has enabled us to work through the winter on bridges and ramps and keep the project on schedule,” said Chris Hughes, Ohio Department of Transportation District 1 deputy director.

Bluffton University inducted Jerry Burrey ’65 (baseball and basketball), Sarah (Betts ’06) vonSeggern (softball) and Ed Diller ’69 (football) into its Athletics Hall of Fame last weekend. Sarah met with the current softball team after the ceremony in the next photo. Click here for bios of the three new inductees.

Vendor registration open for May 9 event

Arts and crafts show in downtown

Vendor registrations are being accepting for the Saturday, May 9, Bluffton Area Chamber of Commerce arts and crafts festival.

Here are some of the details for this year’s show:
•  Family-oriented festival with lots of free entertainment, such as pony rides, mini golf, a llama exhibit, and live music.

• Vendors selling non-commercial artwork and crafts welcome. Vendor license required.

• Approximately 85 outdoor booth spaces available along Main Street.

• Vendors supply your own booth, canopy etc.

Youth soccer, flag football, volleyball registration open

BFR spring play begins in March

Registration is now underway for Bluffton Family Recreation youth spring soccer leagues, flag football and volleyball, according to Amy Byers, BFR sports coordinator.

“The deadline to register is Sunday, March 1. After this date there will be a late fee. Ordering tee-shirts, splitting teams, setting up coaches and practices, takes time, so please register by the deadline,” she said.
