Forgotten Bluffton: Howard Triplehorn was the first Pirate to play in the Big Ten

The 1931 BHS graduate held several school athletic records • One still stands

Howard Triplehorn, who graduated from Bluffton High School in 1931, was the first Pirate to play in the Big Ten.

At one time three Bluffton High School athletic records belonged to Triplehorn, who eventually played football at the University of Michigan. He held several additional athletic records at BHS, which are in this article.

His records included the BHS football’s career scoring title at 345 points (it stood for 70 seasons when Zac Kohli scored 354 points in 2001).

Skin dryness is a common ailment in the colder months, causing uncomfortable redness and itching. But what causes this issue and how can you prevent it?

One of the downsides of covid-19 – and there are many – is the inability for the community to visit the elementary school. The school announced a photo gallery is now located on the school website and it features photos of class projects in the school hallways. To view the photos click here. The candy cane wishes in the school entrance shows artistic candy canes designed in the style of contemporary pop artist Romero Britto. Artists are first and second graders.

Bluffton Hospital will administer vaccines to those 80 and older

Registration begins on Jan. 18 • vaccines administered beginning Jan. 23

Vaccinations for Bluffton community members, 80 years of age and older, will begin Saturday, Jan. 23, at Bluffton Hospital, a division of Blanchard Valley Health System (BVHS).

These individuals can register for the vaccine beginning Monday, Jan. 18, by calling 419.369.2323.

Operating hours for the call center are Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. There are a limited number of vaccines available, therefore, vaccines will be given on a first-come, first-served basis. A caregiver or loved one may make an appointment on behalf of an eligible senior.

Daren Lee named acting chief operating officer of MHCO

He joined the senior living community as director of Maple Crest in 2006

Daren Lee was recently named acting chief operating officer of Mennonite Home Communities of Ohio, according to Elizabeth Kelly, MHCO board chair.

On Aug. 1, Lee moved into a dual role of Mennonite Home Communities of Ohio Team Leader and Director of Maple Crest and Independent Living by the Board of Directors. 

During his time in this role, he has coordinated leadership team meetings, facilitated continued collaboration between campuses, and explored opportunities to better align service areas across the MHCO continuum of care.
