3 Democrat candidates for Congress will debate in Bluffton

Three Democratic candidates are vying for the chance to represent Allen County – and Ohio's Fourth Congressional District – in Congress. 

In Ohio’s primary on March 17, Democratic voters will choose one of these candidates to run for the seat currently held by Jim Jordan in the U.S. House. 

Saturday, Feb 15, the public is invited to hear what these candidates have to say, in an open forum from 7-9 p.m. at the Bluffton town hall third floor, 154 N. Main St. 

The forum will include opening and closing statements as well as the chance for rebuttals.

Snow shoveling tips - it doesn't have to cause back pain

Snow shoveling is one of those things that no one likes to do, but most of us have to do, living in northwest Ohio,” says Wanda Dean, MSPT of Northwest Physical Therapy.

“What often accompanies this chore is the aching back and the heating pad, making the rest of your day miserable.”  Dean said, “There are some things we can all do to prevent injury and make snow shoveling a chore that doesn’t have to cause pain.”

Pirates beat Falcons in low-scoring battle

MT. BLANCHARD - Visiting Bluffton beat Riverdale 38-33 in a defensive non-conference boys basketball bout Saturday night.

The Pirates improved to 16-4 with the deliberate road win. Meanwhile, Riverdale fell to 14-6 with the defeat.

Bluffton led 10-9 after the first period, and was on top 17-13 at intermission in the low-scoring affair. The Pirates managed to outscore the Falcons 21-20 after halftime to hold on for the win.

Award-winning poet reading Feb. 20

Poet George Kalamaras will give a public reading at 4 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 20, in the Reading Room of Bluffton University’s Musselman Library.

Kalamaras is the author of “That Moment of Wept,” as well as 16 other books of poetry and a book of scholarship. His awards include the New Michigan Press Prize/DIAGRAM Chapbook Award and the Elixir Press Poetry Prize. Additionally, Kalamaras received an Indo-U.S. Advanced Research Fellowship in 1994, and has twice received an Individual Artist Fellowship from the Indiana Art Commission.

Feb. 22 caregivers support network program in Ottawa

A caregiver support network event takes place on Saturday, Feb. 22, according to Jami Dellifield, of the Hardin County OSU extension office. A two-page flyer attached at the bottom of this story provides complete details.

The local event is held at the Putnam County Extension Office, 1206 E. 2nd Street, Ottawa. Check in is at 12:30 p.m. and the program begins at 1 p.m.

The cost is $10 for individuals. Several resources are available for participants.

Maxine Wince retired from Ford Motor Company Lima Engine Plant

Maxine Wince,  86, died on Friday, Feb. 7, 2020, at 7:48 a.m. at Lima Memorial Health System. 

She was born on June 26, 1933, in Johnson County, Kentucky, to the late Floyd and Ocie (May) Bayes.  Maxine was previously married to Hobert Wright and he preceded her in death in 1971.  On June 20, 1981, Maxine married Glenn E. Wince and he preceded her in death on Dec. 13, 2014.

Maxine retired from Ford Motor Company Lima Engine Plant.  She was a homemaker and helped with the family farm.  Maxine was an avid gardener and enjoyed quilting, canning and crocheting.
