Chamber puts out the welcome mat for new university students

Saturday, Aug. 24, some 240 students will explore the village

The Bluffton Area Chamber of Commerce puts out the welcome mat for new Bluffton University students on Saturday, Aug. 24, according to Paula Scott, CEO.

“Join us in welcoming new Bluffton University students, when they visit downtown Bluffton with their orientation groups – and during the coming weeks,” she said.

The chamber will be meeting with some 240 new students who will be exploring the village on Saturday, Aug. 24. They will receive maps and an overview of all the food, shopping, services, and more that the village has to offer.

Julia Smallcomb wins easily at third singles 6-1, 6-0

BLUFFTON - The Bluffton girls tennis team nipped visiting Defiance 3-2 Tuesday evening.

With their third straight win, the Lady Pirates improved to 3-2 this season.

Bluffton senior Erin Hotmire improved her record to 4-1 at first singles with an impressive 6-1, 6-1 victory.

Pirate junior Julia Smallcomb also won easily at third singles 6-1, 6-0.

The Bluffton tandem of Ellie Nickel and Libby Frazier provided the third win at number two doubles by a 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 count.

A closer look

4 photos and high-tailing out of there

Driving on County Line Road just north of Lincoln Highway between Ada and Bluffton, the photographer saw a deer in a field.

Stopping the car and grabbing a camera, only four photos were snapped, and the deer and its fawn (see photo 2) disappeared into the corn field.

This scene took place in less than 30 seconds.

Girls' tennis: BHS evens record at 2-2, beating Tiffin Calvert

Junior Olivia Barnes also rolled to a 6-4, 6-0 victory at second singles

BLUFFTON - Host Bluffton defeated Tiffin Calvert handily in a girls tennis match 4-1 Monday evening.

Senior Erin Hotmire rolled to a straight-sets win at first singles by a 6-0, 6-1 count. She is now 3-1 this season.

Junior Olivia Barnes also rolled to a 6-4, 6-0 victory at second singles.

Pirates Pearl Lewandowski and Ellison Pugsley pulled out a three-set win at first doubles, 6-0, 6-7 (3-7), 6-2.

Bluffton's Ellie Nickel and Libby Frazier also won 6-3, 6-3 at second doubles.

Last slide run on Thursday

Thursday is the final day for the Bluffton Community Swimming Pool to be open. Hours are 2 to 6 p.m., and those hours depend upon the number of swimmers at the pool.
