Dr. DeBow Freed was a past president of Ohio Northern University

FROM ADA ICON - Former Ohio Northern University President Dr. DeBow Freed. died in his home in Ada on Feb. 8, 2020.

Born Aug. 26, 1925, DeBow Freed grew up on his family’s farm near Hendersonville, Tennessee. He was elected president of his high school class, graduated from Gallatin Tennessee High School at age 17, and was appointed, attended, and graduated from West Point in 1946 when he was 20 years old.

Xavier Dunifon, BHS January student of the month

Plans to major in computer science at ONU or Ohio State

Xavier Dunifon, a Bluffton High School senior, is the January BHS student of the month.

He is a member of Spanish Club, likes photography and is creating the senior video for graduation.  He had received the "Photography Student of the Year" award at the recent academic banquet.

He is a member of the BHS track team. In 2019 he was a championship finalist in the 300m hurdles at the state track meet.

The identify of J. Denny and Jenny Beaver will be revealed on Saturday. The revealing will take place between the men's and women's basketball games at the Sommer Center. Watch the video below for more details.

Great Backyard Bird Count Feb. 14-17

Quarry Farm invites participants on Saturday

Each February, the National Audubon Society and Cornell Lab of Ornithology team up to coordinate the Great Backyard Bird Count.

Join fellow birders of all skill levels on Saturday, Feb. 15, to walk the trails at The Quarry Farm Nature Preserve & Conservation Farm  from 9 to 10:30 a.m.

Edgar Hauenstein, Bluffton's druggist to an earlier generation

Edgar Hauenstein, Bluffton's druggist to an earlier generation, stands in his pharmacy, which is today The Twisted Whisk cafe at the corner of Main and Cherry.

Seen in the backgrounds are authentic apothecary bottles, which are over 80 years old. 

This photo was taken at his retirement from the Bluffton-Richland Public Library board, where he served as a board member for 23 years.  Edgar graduated from Bluffton High School in 1896.
