Stratton Greenhouses spring open house this weekend

It's time to get serious about spring flowers and veggies.

Stratton's Greenhouses will hold a spring open house Friday, April 29, through Sunday, May 1, at the greenhouses located at 9915 Lincoln Highway, Bluffton.

According to Susie and Steve Stratton, "We have an entire line of vegetables, proven winner plants, wave petunias, trees and shrubs for all your landscaping needs."

The open house includes drawings, food and special offers.

Here comes a bike path

You've probably noticed trees missing along Augsburger Road between the university nature preserve and Bentley Road. It's one of the steps in creating an eventual bike-pathway from Bentley all the way to Maple Crest. The project, undertaken by the Bluffton Pathway Committee, will be completed in late summer.

Shirley’s Gourmet Popcorn Co. expanding to Lima

Bluffton-based Shirley’s Gourmet Popcorn Co. is announcing plans to open a Lima store in the fall of 2016.

The store, co-anchoring a newly-constructed retail plaza at 435 S. Eastown Rd., will be the company’s fifth location overall, and second corporate store alongside the flagship location in downtown Bluffton.

Co-founder and CEO Pete Suter said the newest location is the result of a history of strong ties between the Shirley’s brand and the Lima community.

Louise Cantwell volunteered over 2,000 hours at Bluffton Hospital

A. Louise Cantwell, 91, died April 27, 2016, at Mennonite Memorial Home, Bluffton.  Louise was born Oct. 4, 1924, in Three Rivers, Michigan, to the late Lester and June (Baxter) Luse.  On April 29, 1950, she married Leslie Cantwell, Jr. who preceded her in death on Nov. 29, 1989.

Homer Miller was a WWII Army Air Force pilot

Homer Edward Miller, 92, died April 28, 2016, at Mennonite Memorial Home, Bluffton.  Homer was born May 27, 1923 in Gomer, Ohio, to the late Homer and Cecile (Rigdon) Miller who preceded him in death. On May 2, 1947, he married Dorothy (Davis) Miller who survives.

Homer was a lifetime farmer and retired as a tool and die maker from Superior Coach in Lima.  He was a pilot in the Army Air Force during World War II.  Homer was a 60-year member of the Masonic Lodge #72 in Delphos and member of the Allen County Farm Bureau.  He was a graduate of Gomer High School.
