Men's soccer: Peter Carlson nets game-winner with seven seconds left

The Bluffton University men's soccer team scored twice in the final eight minutes to upend Shawnee State 2-1 on Saturday, Sept. 8, 2012. The Beavers (1-2) picked up their first win of the season as Shawnee stayed winless at 0-5.

The home team posted an 11-6 edge in first half shots, but the match remained scoreless after 45 minutes of action. The Bears used a Luke Purpero direct kick in minute 62 to go up 1-0.

With just under eight minutes on the clock, sophomore Peter Carlson (Toledo/Springfield) found Dylan Mathews (Arlington) for his first goal of the season. Carlson was not finished as he took a cross from Caleb Berlon (Kettering/Fairmont) and hit paydirt with seven ticks remaining for Bluffton's first victory of the season.

Shawnee State finished with a marked 28-14 edge in shots, including 14-7 on frame. The home team forced two more corner kicks (5-3) and committed three more fouls (11-8).

Carlson and Ben Knotts (Carrollton) both fired three shots, while Mathews and Jordan Andrews (Clinton Township, Mich./Chippewa Valley) both chipped in with a pair of shots. Freshman keeper Jeff Yoder (Elkhart, Ind./Bethany Christian) sealed his first victory with 13 saves in the win.

Bluffton returns to the pitch when the Beavers travel to St. Francis on Wednesday, Sept. 12. The match in Fort Wayne, Ind.
