Robert Barkimer owned Bob's IGA in Columbus Grove

Robert M. “Bob” Barkimer, 89, died at 1:48 p.m. at his daughter’s residence on Sunday Sept. 16, 2012. He was born Nov. 13, 1922 in Columbus Grove to Clarence and Myrtle (Featheringill) Barkimer. On June 19, 1943 he married Mary Ellen Burkholder and she died Aug. 15, 2002.

Mr. Barkimer is a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army. He owned Bob’s IGA in Columbus Grove and wall papered many homes in the area. He was a life member of the Columbus Grove American Legion and VFW. He is a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Columbus Grove where was very active and served on many committees. 

Survivors include a daughter Barbara (David) McClurg of Bluffton; six grandchildren Chief Master Sergeant Bradley J. (Paula) Korte station in Tucson, Ariz., Jan Ranae (Wayne) Eversole of Columbus Grove, Eric M. Korte of Las Vegas, Nev., Heather (Jason) Scardina, Melinda (Zach) Decker, Jennifer (John) all of Columbus,; 11 great grandchildren Jerica, Derek and Shandi Korte, Shelby and Riley Eversole, Francesca and Gabriella Decker, Frank, Alana and Jillian Scardina, Michaela and soon to have sister Chess; two sisters, Lois VanBrunt and Alice Blockerger both of Columbus Grove.

He was preceded in death b a son Michael Allen Barkimer whom died in 1991; two sisters, Eula Riggenbach and Mary Smith; and three brothers Clarence Jr., Richard and Charles Barkimer.

Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Chiles-Laman Funeral & Cremation Services, Bluffton. Pastor Harry Tolhurst officiating. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Bluffton where military rites will be held. Visitation will be Tuesday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to First Presbyterian Church in Columbus Grove, Mennonite Memorial Home Health, Bluffton or Putnam County Hospice.
