Bluffton girl netters season ends in sectionals

ELIDA - The Bluffton girls tennis team competed hard but saw their season end at the Div. II sectional tournament Thursday at Elida.

Three Bluffton girls competed in the singles flight, while two Lady Pirate doubles duos also played but fell in tough three-setters.

In her first match Pirate Caitlyn Couch rallied to beat Claire Ellerbrock of Ottawa-Glandorf 5-7, 6-4, 7-5 in the round of 32. It turned out to be the only Pirate win of the day.

Wesley Richard was a former Bluffton University faculty member

Former Bluffton resident, Wesley D. Richard, 80, of Goshen, Indiana, died from a second brain bleed Tuesday, Oct. 6, 2020, at Elkhart General Hospital.

He was born in 1939 in Washington County, Iowa, to Glen and Margaret (Wenger) Richard and grew up near Wayland, Iowa. His parents preceded him in death.

It's soybean harvest season outside of Bluffton. Here's a harvest scene along Columbus Grove Road. This can only mean that corn harvest will follow shortly.

Life Flight helicopters will stock and carry blood on board

Bluffton Airport one of four airbases maintained in the program

The helicopters in the Mercy Health – Life Flight fleet, including those that use the Bluffton Airport, will now stock and carry blood on board helicopters to give patients in need of lifesaving transfusions.

Mercy Health has invested in storage facilities at each of the four Life Flight locations to house and maintain blood right at the base. This new approach means that our flight crews will bring blood on every patient transport.

Rev. Katherine Beckett named interim pastor at St. John's UCC

Pastoral leadership is her second career after being a probate court paralegal

Rev. Katherine Beckett joined the St. John’s United Church of Christ as its interim pastor in September.

This is her second career, after being a probate court paralegal. Rev. Beckett holds a master’s of divinity degree and master of arts in counseling ministry from Methodist Theological School in Ohio, Delaware.

“My ministry focus is in grief counseling,” she said. She has served as a hospital chaplain and was ordained in the ministry in 2010.

Pirate Lovett 12th at district golf meet

BOWLING GREEN - Bluffton junior Kenny Lovett finished in a four-way tie for 12th place in the Div. III northwest district golf tournament Thursday at Stone Ridge Golf Club.

Lovett shot a 39-42=81 total over the 18-hole course to post a strong showing in the 109-player field and end his season. He finished just three shots off the pace for qualification to the state tournament.

Only the top four teams and top four individual scorers not on a qualifying team made it to the Div. III state event October 16-17.
