Swavel named national Defensive Player of Week

USA College Football Team of the Week

BLUFFTON, Ohio - A pair of Bluffton University football players added honors to their ever-growing resumes when USA College Football announced its weekly awards on Wednesday, Oct. 15. Senior Brad Swavel (Marion/Ridgedale) was one of just two players to be named Defensive Player of Week following his dominating performance at Rose-Hulman on Saturday, Oct. 11. It marks the first time that a Beaver has secured the award. Sophomore cornerback Miguel Alicea (Westerville/South) earned Honorable Mention honors for his work at Rose as well.

Swavel finished with nine tackles to go along with an interception, a forced fumble, a breakup and a fumble recovery in Bluffton's 31-17 victory at Rose-Hulman on Saturday. He helped the Beavers hold the top offense in the nation to almost 300 yards below its 622 yards per game average.

The senior linebacker leads the Beavers with 50 tackles and his 10.0 tackles per game ranks fourth in the Heartland Conference.

Alicea came up with three tackles, a game-high four pass breakups, and an interception in the road win over the Engineers. He returned the interception 47 yards to the house late in the third quarter, giving the Beavers a 31-17 advantage. His work in the secondary helped the Beavers hold Rose's No. 1 rated offense and passing attack to nearly 300 yards under their season average. Alicea was also named the Heartland Conference Defensive Player of the Week for his efforts at Rose-Hulman.

Bluffton will take its show back on the road again this Saturday, Oct. 18, when the Beavers travel to Richmond, Ind., looking to even their record at 3-3 with a third straight victory! Kickoff at Earlham College is slated for 1:30 p.m.
