CINCINNATI, Ohio - The Bluffton University Beavers were denied the chance for their fourth series victory in as many chances, as they were defeated in the rubber match of their series with Mount St Joseph, 12-2, in seven innings on Monday, April 6. The loss dropped the Beavers to 15-8 and 8-3 in the HCAC, still leading by a game over Anderson, Earlham and Rose-Hulman. The Lions improved to 9-12 and 4-7 in the conference.

The Lions held a 1-0 lead when Tyler Spalding (Willis, Mich./Lincoln) scored on a throwing error in the fourth to tie the contest. But MSJ blew it open with five in the fifth to take a 6-1 lead. The Lions would add three tallies in the sixth and, following a homer from Mike Castro (Reynoldsburg) to lead off the seventh, cap it with three more in the seventh to finish off the mercy-rule victory.

The Beaver loss fell to Jaylen Von Sossan (Ottawa/Ottawa-Glandorf), who gave up three runs and six hits in four-plus innings, while striking out four Lions. MSJ’s Matt Hoffman (2-2) threw a complete game, giving up just two runs (one earned) on four hits in shutting the Beavers down. The Bluffton hitting was highlighted by Castro’s 2-for-3 effort with the solo homer. Spalding and T.J. Devore (Grove City) both added base knocks for the visitors.

The Beavers jump right back into Heartland Conference action as they hit the road to battle the Earlham College Quakers on Tuesday, April 7. First pitch is set for 4:15 p.m. The Beavers return home for a three-game series with the Manchester Spartans, beginning on Friday, April 10. First pitch is set for 4:15 p.m. Come support your Beavers!
