15 with Emily Swisher on her passion for nursing, campus involvement and more

By Sophia Marcum

Our previoius interview was with a BGSU freshman from Bluffton High School, so we decided to keep the ball rolling. Emily Swisher has dived into her major and tells us all about how she’s pursuing her passions in her first semester on campus.

Where are you attending school and what are you studying?
I am currently majoring in Pre-Nursing at Bowling Green State University.

What inspired you to study this?
I have always had a passion for helping people, plus I think the nursing field is a very unique field. There are so many different job opportunities that are nursing affiliated, so you can easily find a job that's the perfect fit for you.

Have you joined any organizations on campus? If so, what do you do within them?
Yes, I just recently joined the Pre-Nursing Student Association. We do community service projects throughout the community, and have group study nights. The upperclassmen help prepare the underclassmen for what to expect in the upper division program.

Would you rather take an exam or write a paper? Why?
I would definitely rather write a paper than take an exam. I don't like exams, or studying for exams. Plus papers seem to impact your grade less.

What is your favorite class you’re taking this semester? What types of things do you learn in it?
My favorite class I am taking this semester would have to be my Intro to Nursing class. In this class we have guest speakers who come in to talk about the job they do every day in the nursing field. We also have group discussions about what nursing is all about and what it takes to become a nurse.

Netflix is the notorious sidekick of today’s college student. Do you have any favorite shows you follow?
I am really into Chicago Fire, Chicago PD, and a few other medical related shows. Plus, my roommate and I still watch the classics, The Golden Girls, every night.

What advice would you give to this year’s seniors at Bluffton High School?
To not take your senior year for granted, and seize every moment of it all because before you know it everyone who you once grew up with over the past 13 years or so will all be going their separate ways.

What are you most looking forward to over the next four years?
I am looking forward to continuing to pursue my Bachelor's in nursing at BG, making more friends, and staying involved around campus.
