Carol Groman was active in several Bluffton organizations

She took 6 overseas VOSH mission trips

Carol Anne (Sammet) Groman, 85, died at 6:10 a.m. on May 22, 2017 at Bluffton Hospital surrounded by her family and friends after three years of treatment for soft tissue sarcoma. 

Carol was born Jan. 6, 1932, in Marseilles to the late Ralph and Wilda (Bear) Sammet. On July 3, 1955, she married Morris Joseph Groman who died on Jan. 20, 2017.

Carol graduated from Marseilles High School in 1950 and from Bluffton College in 1954.  She taught in the Lorain City and Bluffton Elementary Schools. Carol later worked at Bluffton College, Bluffton Community Hospital and the Mennonite Memorial Home in Bluffton.

Carol was active with the Gardeners of Bluffton and Pandora Area, having held various positions over the years.  She helped the Volunteer Optometric Services to Humanity (VOSH) – Ohio Chapter, taking part in six overseas mission trips and served the Pandora VOSH eyeglasses sorting center. 

She was active with the Bluffton Senior Citizens Center, volunteered at the Mennonite Memorial Home and at St. John’s United Church of Christ, where she was an active member and had served in many leadership positions.

Survivors include three children, Dr. Darrell Groman of Bluffton, Doris (Robert) Edington of Thompson's Station, Tennessee, J. Daniel (Brenda) Groman of Columbus Grove; eight grandchildren, Misha and Christian Groman, Kyle, Travis and Jacob Edington, Krysti (Phil) Schey, Kurt (Amy) Groman and Joel (Rachel) Groman; and four great-grandchildren, Korwynn and Renwyck Schey and Theo and Nora Groman. 

She is also survived by her sister, Francis (Don) Schilling of Upper Sandusky, a sister-in-law, Janet Groman of Lima; former daughter-in-law Irina Groman of Elida and several nieces, nephews and cousins.   

Carol was preceded in death by her brother, Dale Sammet, sisters-in-law, Martha Sammet, Margaret A. Elsass and A. Jean Groman; and brothers-in-law, Walter Elsass and Allen O. Groman.

Services will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, May 26, at St. John’s United Church of Christ, Bluffton, with Pastor Carol Clements officiating. 

Burial will be at Maple Grove Cemetery in Bluffton.  Visitation will be from 2 – 4 p.m. and 6 – 8 p.m. Thursday at Chiles-Laman Funeral & Cremation Services in Bluffton. 

Memorial contributions may be made to St. John’s United Church of Christ or to the Gardeners of Bluffton and Pandora Area.
