Bluffton University to host reception for “The Mirror of the Martyrs” exhibit

A reception for the traveling exhibit “The Mirror of the Martyrs” will be held from 10 a.m.-noon on Saturday, Oct. 7, in the Grace Albrecht Gallery of Bluffton University’s Sauder Visual Arts Center.

During the reception, which takes place on Homecoming weekend, visitors will have the opportunity to meet with Bluffton art faculty.

“The Mirror of the Martyrs” exhibit runs from Oct. 1 through Nov. 5. Regular gallery hours are Monday-Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Saturday, 1-5 p.m. and Sunday, 1-6 p.m.

The dramatic and colorful exhibit tells the story of religious conflict and violence in the Reformation era from the perspective of Anabaptist martyrs and offers one way to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the beginning of the Protestant Reformation.

The exhibit is based on illustrated martyr stories from the 1685 “Martyrs Mirror,” and features eight of the original copper plates produced by Dutch artist Jan Luyken to illustrate the book. The award-winning exhibit was developed and produced at the Kauffman Museum in North Newton, Kan.

A number of exhibit-related presentations and performances will take place during the exhibit’s stay at Bluffton. More information about the exhibit and presentations can be found at http://www.bluffton.edu/arts/mirror/

All events are free and open to the public unless otherwise noted.
