"Exploring Creativity Through Equations, Words and Sawdust"

Topic of Darryl Nester's Oct. 27 colloquium

Dr. Darryl Nester, professor of mathematics, will present the Colloquium, "Exploring Creativity Through Equations, Words and Sawdust," on Friday, Oct. 27.

During the presentation, Nester will discuss how he found inspiration and occasionally a distraction from Bluffton's 2016-17 Civic Engagement theme with the work he was doing for his fall 2016 sabbatical.

Nester said that one of his goals during his sabbatical was to revise portion of a book he is co-writing with Dr. Hamid Rafizadeh.

“It might seem that a text on "Data Analysis and Decision Making" would have little place for creativity,” said Nester. “However, my primary interest in the revision was to develop new exercises for the course we teach using that book. Such exercises typically need a ‘backstory’ for motivation, which sometimes made me feel more like a short-story writer than a mathematician.”

His presentation is free and open to the public beginning at 4 p.m. in Centennial Hall’s Stutzman Lecture Hall.
