Professional development workshop

For Bluffton University students

Bluffton University students were able to get a head start on developing the critical professional skills needed for the workforce during the Like a Pro workshop held on campus Jan. 30.
 
“We’ve had similar events to this one before on campus, but this event in particular pulls in resources from both campus and the wider community,” said Kiera Suffel, a junior communication major.

“The Center for Career and Vocation is a great resource on campus for this sort of thing, but bringing additional professionals to campus really helps prepare us for the workforce. These employers know what they are looking for in interviews and resumes, and it’s really helpful to know what exactly they want in a candidate.”
 
The event featured five different work stations outlining skills such as basic business etiquette and interview tips.
 
After the event, several students practiced the skills developed at the Like a Pro event during the Ohio Foundation of Independent Colleges CareerFest in Columbus.

Students will have another chance to participate in professional development experiences on Feb. 28 when Bluffton University will host its annual Employer Expo.
 
“This event is a great way for students who are looking for internships or full-time work opportunities to get a head start on networking with local employers as well as being able to refine the skills they already have. Everyone at some point in their life will go through an interviewing process, so this is a great way to ensure our students are able to perform their best and really make a good first impression,” said Cody Sanderson, graduate assistant at the Center for Career and Vocation.
 
Students across campus participated in the event sponsored by Bluffton’s Center for Career and Vocation and Bluffton University Business Leaders.

The Like a Pro event featured professionals from several major employers in west central Ohio, including St. Rita’s Medical Center, Auto-Owners Insurance and ValFilm.

These professionals were available at each station and answered questions regarding the process of both applying for work experiences as well how to handle a job offer.
 
Shelby Koenig, a junior marketing and business administration major, believes every Bluffton student should attend an event like this one.
 
“It’s a great way for students to get some hands-on experience before they actually have to go out into the workforce and use these skills. You know you won’t embarrass yourself while you’re out looking for jobs because you’ve already worked through the kinks that may happen when your nerves kick in. It’s events like this that really hone in your skills and allow you to gain the confidence you need.”
