(SPENCERVILLE) - The Bluffton boys track team won the final meet event, the 4x400, by a strong 20 feet that would have given the Pirates back to back Northwest Conference championships Saturday.
However, several minutes later after the race ended, the Pirate relay team was disqualified for a contact infraction and Columbus Grove won the NWC title by a 111-107 count. While the boys team officially finished second, the girls team took fourth place.
Freshman Asher Antrim had another big weekend for the boys squad. The youngster won the 1600, took second in the 800 and was part of the winning 4x800 relay squad.
Sophomore Baylor Garmatter was also on the 4x800 team and won the 400 individually in 52.9. Kaleb Jefferson won the high jump at 6-2, was the anchor of the 4x100 team finishing second and took third in the discus, showing some true versatility.
Deandre Nassar, Elise Lemley, Chad Veit and Jefferson made up the 4x200 team. Xavier Dunifon took second at 300 hurdles. Jackson Steinmetz took fourth in the 1600 and fifth at 3200.
Deandre Nassar excelled in a variety of events running in the 4x100, taking seventh in the 100 and eighth in shot put. Other point scorers for Bluffton were Elijah Conley (6th in the 3200) and Eli Lemley (8th at 200).
Girls results
Two second place finishes paced the girls effort Saturday. The 4x400 crew of Karis Wilson, Lucie Fett, Clara Mathews and Kayla Kindle were runner up in the final event of the day.
Senior Sydney Hoff was second across the line in the 3200. Hoff added a third place finish in the 1600 as well. Kayla Kindle took third in the 800. Arielle O’Neal finished fourth in shot put to go along with her second place discus finish Thursday.
Allison Wise, Bella Basinger, Olivia Setzer and Alyssa Casemier were fourth in the 4x100. Abbey Gambrell finished fifth in the 100 Hurdles and seventh in the 300 hurdles. Clara Mathews earned points with a fifth place finish in the mile.
Other point earners for BHS included the 4x200 team of Allison Wise, Sarah Cartwright, Olivia Setzer and Karis Wilson. Lauren Rhodes (6th in pole vault), Olivia Burner (6th in 800), Cora Bischoff (7th in high jump) and Joscelin Reineke (8th in 100 hurdles) rounded out the scoring effort for Bluffton.
The girls finished fourth overall with 79.5 points. Columbus Grove won the girls portion of the meet with 202.5 points.
The track & field squads now ready themselves for the OHSAA District Meet held this coming week at Liberty Benton on Thursday and Saturday. The top four finishers in each event move on to Regionals.
