No surprise here - GOP candidates win in Bluffton and Richland

However, Democrat Senator Brown's totals indicate his popularity

It was no surprise that Republican candidates for state office swept Bluffton, Richland Township and Beaverdam voters on Nov. 6.

Bluffton voters supported Mike DeWine, Republican, over Richard Cordray, Democrat, in the governor’s race. Only once since 1936 have Bluffton voters supported a Democrat governor candidate. Watch the Icon for details on this historic trend.

A mild surprise was the popularity of Democrat Senator Sherrod Brown, who won in two-out-of three Bluffton precincts and only lost in Bluffton by 50 votes to Jim Renacci, the Republican candidate. Brown’s popularity in Ohio, as a Democrat, went against the tide of GOP state winners in this mid-term election, as he was re-elected to the U.S. Senate.

Bluffton, Richland and Beaverdam voter followed state trends by resoundingly voting against Issue 1. They also followed county trends in supporting the mental heath levy on the ballot.
