Baseball: Pirate nine downed by Carey

By Cort Reynolds
CAREY - The host Carey baseball team used late-inning firepower to defeat Bluffton 13-3 in non-league play Tuesday evening.

The Pirates took the lead with a three-run rally in the top of the second inning. Freshman Cole Koenig singled in a run and junior Cayden Rayle doubled home another Pirate to give the visitors a 3-0 edge.

But Carey chipped away with two runs in the bottom of the second. In the home half of the fourth, the hosts took the lead with a five-run eruption.

The Blue Devils then put the game out of reach with six runs in the fifth frame to end it via the 10-run rule, 13-3.

Junior Gabe Colley led the Pirate offense with two hits and a run. Senior Brett Basinger hit a double while classmate Jason Althaus contributed a single and a run.

Carey out-hit Bluffton just 6-5, but capitalized on four errors to score five unearned runs. The Devils also drew 11 walks.
