Beaver track team sets school records at All-Ohio Championship meet

The Bluffton University track and field team made the trip to Ohio Wesleyan University for the second straight weekend to partake in the Division III All-Ohio Championship meet and came home with a couple of school records.

The record breaking began early in the day as junior Connor Gulick (St. Louisville/Utica) ran a time of 9:51.77 in the steeplechase, good enough for a ninth-place finish and 10 seconds faster than his own school record, which he broke in Myrtle Beach to open the outdoor campaign. It is the third-best time in the HCAC with just two weeks left until the HCAC Championships. Gulick also came back to run a 2:01.85 in the 800 later in the day, placing 13th out of 24 runners and winning his section.

Also grabbing a personal best for the men's distance squad was freshman Austin Hernandez (Marion/Ridgedale) who ran a time of 4:25.25 in the 1500.

The sprint squad scored a pair of season bests. Freshman Daniel Williams (Lansing, Mich./Waverly) ran an 11.44 in the 100, which is an HCAC qualifying time and places him eighth on the HCAC performance list. Sophomore Omar Warlick (East Pointe, Mich./Clintondale) ran a season-best, HCAC qualifying mark of 22.67 seconds in the 200-meter dash, which jumps him into the seventh spot in the conference.

Those two were joined by freshman Dalton Taynor (Troy/Miami East) and junior Christian Parker (Urbana/West Liberty) on the 4x100-meter relay and they grabbed a fifth-place finish with a time of 43.73 seconds, just a few tenths off of their season-best.

Freshman Brandon James (Waynesfield/Waynesfield-Goshen) continued his superb freshman season in the 110 meter hurdles, running a personal-best 16.25 seconds and leaping to fourth in the HCAC. James also grabbed 11th place finishes in both the 400 hurdles and the triple jump to round out his Saturday.

Moving to the field, freshman Noah Judd (Columbia City, Ind.) grabbed another third place finish in the long jump competition, jumping 21 feet, 11.5 inches, a personal-best and the best mark in the HCAC thus far in 2019!

Freshman Keyon Camden also jumped a personal-best in the high jump competition, leaping over the bar at 5 feet, 10 inches, qualifying for the HCAC Championships and giving him the eighth-best mark in the conference.

Junior thrower John Jones (Cincinnati/Walnut Hills) threw a personal-best toss of 123 feet, 3 inches in the discus on Saturday as well.

Sophomore Bailie Barrington (Waynesfield/Waynesfield Goshen) highlighted the women's side with a school-record of her own in the 1500, running a time of 4:57.31, good enough for 10th in the meet and fifth on the HCAC performance list. Barrington came back in the 800 to run a 2:25.24, just two seconds off of her all-time best.

Junior Alexis Cash (Gaines, Mich./Lake Fenton) added a season-best 10th place finish in the 5000 with a time of 18:36.70, the fourth-best time in school history and the second-best mark in the HCAC this season.

Senior Keturah Warlick (East Pointe, Mich./Clintondale) ran a personal-best time in the 200 to lead the spring squad with a time of 27.31 seconds.

Finally, senior Maelinn Delong (Archbold/Bryan) added her best mark of the season in the shot put with a toss of 36 feet, 8.25 inches, the fifth-best mark of the year in the HCAC.

The Beavers don't have far to travel for their final tuneup before the HCAC Championship, as they head to Ohio Northern for the AJ Cody Invitational on Friday, April 19, and Saturday, April 20. The hammer and javelin will be contested on Friday at 3 p.m., while the rest of the meet will begin at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
