Doris Fuerstenau died on her 99th birthday

Doris Lillian (Krause) Fuerstenau, 99, died on her birthday, at 4:30 a.m., May 7, 2020. She moved to Ohio, near her son, Mark and his family, last October, when she was no longer physically able to remain in her own home. She was originally from Richmond, Michigan.

Born on May 7, 1921, to Herman and Wilhelmina (Killian) Krause, She married Charles Fuerstenau and they were married for 69 years. He died in 2009.

Teacher Appreciation Week was May 4-8. In cooperation with the Bluffton PTO, the Icon is posting drawings of elementary teachers created by elementary students.

Bluffton residents standing up and being counted

Community's U.S. Census self-response rate at 76.5%

Bluffton residents are standing up and being counted.

The latest self-response rates as of May 12 reveal that 76.5 percent of Bluffton residents have responded to the U.S. Census. Of that total, 66 percent responded on the census internet survey. 

Bluffton’s 2010 response rate to the census was 82.6 percent, so it appears that the village is on track to top that percentage figure this time around.

The accompanying chart show total census responses in Allen County.

Census Day was April 1. For persons who have yet to be counted, there are three ways to do it.

Ottawa Hills, Perrysburg join BHS boys' soccer schedule in the fall

All Bluffton sports schedules released, posted below

The BHS fall sports scene just got more interesting.

Fall 2020 Bluffton High School sports schedules were released this month and the BHS boys’ soccer team added two traditional heavyweights to its regular season schedule.

Bluffton will travel to Division I Perrysburg on Thursday, Sept. 10. And, the Pirates will entertain perennial-power Ottawa Hills on Thursday, Sept. 24.

Pirate fans will recall last fall that Bluffton bumped Ottawa Hills 4-2 in the regional finals to advance to its first-ever Division III state meet in Columbus.
