Retiring mama

I have a lot of heroes, but the one that ranks right up at the top is my mother. She'll probably snort with laughter when she sees that, but it's true. After all, how many 87-year-olds still work at two different retail stores several times a month, teach piano lessons, walk a half mile or ride a stationary bike most days, drive themselves most places, act as chauffeur to their non-driving friends, serve as an officer in her quilt club, make quilts for their grandchildren, take courses through ILR, sing in the Messiah every year and sing in the church choir?

It must belong to Karim Awad

It belongs to Karim Award

We spied this plate in front of the Award residence on Dec. 26. Knowing that Karim lives in Connecticut, we naturally figured it's his. To get the full impact of this plate, read the "61 minutes with Ben Luginbuhl."

61 minutes with Ben Luginbuhl; and don't believe a word of it

Ben standing in front of the '94 Dodge

By Fred Steiner

11:11 a.m. on the CNB clock. Dec. 26, 2009.

Ben Luginbuhl, always man-about-town in Bluffton, now of Portland, Ore., gets at the wheel of his parent's 1994 Dodge Caravan with 198,500 miles logged on it. There was a half tank of gas, peanuts on the floor mat and two cups of Common Grounds coffee to go in the cup holders.

He's in town for a few days and wants to get caught up on the slander and libel of the place. I want to cruise in the Caravan. It's an even trade.

He asks me if I've ever bagged it. I say, "No. What is it."
