Several area graduates from Bluffton University

Several area residents were among graduates at the May 6 118th annual Bluffton University commencement. They include:

 • Phillip M. Birkey of Bluffton, Master of Arts in Organizational Management

Traci Heinze of Bluffton, bachelor’s degree in organizational management. Heinze was the recipient of the Distinguished Scholar in Organizational Management award and is a 2017-18 Pi Delta Society member.

Joseph Bischoff of Bluffton, bachelor’s degree in physics with chemistry and mathematics minors.

Baseball drops HCAC opener to Manchester

FRANKLIN, Ind. - The Bluffton University baseball team lost its first-ever Heartland Conference tournament game but it made its fans proud in an 8-5 loss to Manchester University on May 10, 2018. Bluffton stands 21-17 overall and the Beavers will face the loser of Anderson vs. Rose-Hulman at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, May 11, 2018.

Adel Sommers in Bluffton University Iceland cross-cultural experience

Adel Sommers  is participating in a Bluffton University cross-cultural experience in Iceland during the month of May.

Sommers, along with other Bluffton students, will experience an island nation,
which has made great strides toward building a nonviolent, ecologically sustainable and egalitarian society.

Sommers, daughter of Cindy and Tom Sommers, is a junior majoring in business
administration with a concentration in human resources. She was a 2015
graduate of Bluffton High School.

Dr. James Harder awarded honorary degree

More than 200 diplomas were awarded during Bluffton University’s 118th Commencement ceremony on Sunday, May 6, including an honorary degree to President James Harder, who also served as Commencement speaker.
 
“To the 2018 graduates, it looks like we’ll be celebrating together, doesn’t it,” joked Dr. Harder in his reflections to students. “Although, I have definitely taken more time to get here than you have.”
 

Speech on restorative justice and sexual violence

Earns top marks in oratorical contest

Irena Xhari ’18, a business administration major from Lezha, Albania, was named the winner of Bluffton University’s annual C. Henry Smith Peace Oratorical Contest held April 11.
