Pink Awareness: Breast Cancer Trends

Charlotte Haley started the breast cancer ribbon campaign in the 1990s to bring awareness to the lack of support for breast cancer prevention, education and research. Her peach colored ribbons were attached to a card providing the facts behind the lack of research dollars being allocated to study the disease. Charlotte was a breast cancer survivor who had a strong family history including her sister, grandmother and daughter.

Her ribbons were indeed peach. So, why are the current ribbons pink? Estée Lauder and Self magazine wanted permission from Haley to use the peach ribbon as a symbol for breast cancer advocacy. Haley denied the request and the lawyers for Estée Lauder recommended selecting another color. This resulted in the birth of the pink ribbon to symbolize breast cancer awareness.

George G. Goldsberry was a heavy equipment operating engineer

George G. Goldsberry, 89, went home to his heavenly father on April 23, 2024, from the Meadows of Ottawa.

George was born August 13, 1934 in Hocking County, Ohio to Howard and Opal Goldsberry who preceded him in death. On October 18, 1953 he married Sandra (Tripplehorn) Goldsberry who preceded him in death on March 13, 2008.

James “Jim” R. Steiner worked for Ford Motor Company

James “Jim” R. Steiner, 76, passed away April 24, 2024, at Bridge Hospice Care Center.

Jim was born December 8, 1948 in Bluffton, to Woodrow and Betty (Clymer) Steiner who preceded him in death. On November 14, 1981 he married Linda Dunlap Steiner who survives.

Village committee meetings and Arbor Day celebration, April 27-May 13

The following meetings and an Arbor Day celebration have been scheduled by the Village of Bluffton. The meetings will be at the Bluffton Town Hall, unless noted.

Tree Commission (Arbor Day Celebration) on Saturday, April 27 at 10:00 a.m. at the Bluffton Community Pool

Pathway Committee on Thursday, May 2 at noon.

Ordinance Committee on Monday, May 6 at 5:00 p.m.

Village Council on Monday, May 13 at 7:00 p.m.

Forrest John Clingerman taught at Ohio Northern University

Forrest John Clingerman, 52, passed away April 21, 2024, at his home.

Forrest was born January 29, 1972 in Terre Haute, IN, to John and Claire (Spaulding) Clingerman who survive. On August 20, 1994 he married Gail (Pearson) Clingerman who also survives.

Recap of April 22 Bluffton Council Meeting

Accessory Dwelling Unit ordinance submitted prior to first reading

The April 22 regular meeting of the Village of Bluffton Council was just 30 minutes, time enough to touch on a wide variety of topics of community interest. There was no legislation at the meeting.

In the Ordinance Committee report, council was given proposed Ordinance 13.11.10 regarding Accessory Dwelling Units (pages 7-12 in the attached packet) which addresses “a housing crisis, with home prices and rents unaffordable for families and households of middle and moderate income.” If approved, the ordinance would allow for “legal accessory dwelling units on lots in single-family zones and in other zoning districts.”

Council member Mitch Kingsley announced that the ordinance would receive its first reading at the next regular session.
