Weekend doctor: Intubation vs. Tracheostomy

When you hear a physician say that you or a loved one needs to be intubated or needs a tracheostomy, it is important to understand the purpose of these and how they differ.

A tracheostomy (trach) is a procedure in which a doctor surgically makes an incision in the trachea, sometimes called the “windpipe.” Tracheostomy procedures are performed when there is an obstruction in the airway and intubation is medically not possible, a patient has inefficient oxygen delivery or has problems with secretions.

Tonight Harmon Field features first contest between BHS and PG since the series ended in 1965

Over one half century ago – was it that long ago?

Bluffton High School hasn't played neighboring Pandora-Gilboa HS in football for 54 seasons.

That ends tonight at Harmon Field. The story is below:

This is the first meeting between the Rockets and Pirates in over a half-century. The last meeting between the two neighboring schools was in 1965 when Bluffton won 40-7. Pandora-Gilboa left the Northwest Conference after that season.

Housing starts continue

Housing starts continue underway in the Bluffton Parkview residential housing development. The development broke ground three years ago by Three S Development Group of Bluffton.

Donald Spar was retired from Borden Dairy

Donald Dwight Spar, 96, died at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2019, at Otterbein Cridersville.

Don was born March 29, 1923, in Ada, Ohio, to the late David Dayle and Lucille Ada (Barnes) Spar of Ada, Ohio. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Charles, Karl, Ralph "Flip" and sister Mary Edith (Spar) Frederick. On July 19, 1945, he married Esther M. Hochstettler of Bluffton, Ohio.

Meet Bluffton Farmers Market vendors

Bluffton Farmers Market is the place to be on Saturday mornings in town. According to the Bluffton Area Chamber of Commerce, our town "boasts the best farmers market in northwest Ohio."

In celebration of our small but mighty farmers market, the Icon will be featuring a market vendor each week over the course of the summer.

This week's feature vendor is Anita's Sweets and Treats.

Erik Nygaard top BHS runner at Grove Invite

Erik Nygaard, freshman, was the top Bluffton HS boy finisher in the Columbus Grove cross country invitational held in late August.

Other BHS runners in order of finish were Elijah Conley, Wyatt Lovell, Sam Derstine and Trey Boblitt. Bluffton defeated Bath, Paulding and Lima Central Catholic at the meet.

Nygaard had an personal best for the season at 18:10.
