71st annual Sportsmen's Club trout derby Sunday

Anglers at the 71st annual Bluffton trout derby will be aiming for “Big Andy,” the number one trout named so in honor of Andy Herrmann, longtime Bluffton Sportsmen’s Club director.

The trout derby will be held from 2-4:30 p.m. Sunday, May 3, at the Buckeye Quarry, Main St., Bluffton. The derby includes more than 200 tagged trout with prizes to be awarded. Additional prizes will be awarded to the person who catches the longest trout and the person catching the first trout limit of four.

Mustard Seed Cafe featured in May "Ohio Magazine"

Mustard Seed Café, 562 N. Main St. Bluffton, is featured in the May 2015 issue of "Ohio Magazine."

Lemon Blackberry Shortcakes get top billing on the cover of the magazine and there is a photo of the summer dessert inside.  Chef Rhonda Moor says that her grandparents’ backyard berry patch inspired the fresh fruit she uses to create the “sweet compote that spills out from between two layers of a rustic shortcake.”

State Rep Bob Cupp plans legislative update May 4 at library

State Representative Bob Cupp will hold a legislative update meeting at 11:30 a.m. Monday, May 4, at the Bluffton Public Library.  Cupp represents the 4th Ohio House district, which is comprised of all of Allen County.  The public is invited and encouraged to attend.

Cupp will provide a brief update on legislative activity in the Ohio General Assembly during the first four months of this year.  He will then be available to listen to public concerns and ideas regarding pending legislation or other topics that may be of interest to attendees.

W.C. Fields entertains at May Senior Citizen dinner

W.C. Fields will entertain members of the Bluffton Senior Citizens Center during the 6 p.m., Monday, May 11, monthly dinner meeting. The Icon doesn't know the specifics, but it looks like a pretty interesting program. Ted’s Market will cater the meal. Walter T. Miller will receive his life membership at the dinner as he turns 90 in May.

Annual Stamp Out Hunger food drive May 9

On Saturday, May 9, letter carriers in Bluffton and Beaverdam will participate in the Annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive. The nationwide food drive is the largest one-day food collection in the country, filling food pantries and food banks.

To participate, place non-perishable food items or paper products and or toiletries in bags and leave by your mailbox early Saturday morning or drop them off at the Bluffton post office.

Bluffton Hospital Auxiliary volunteer recognition banquet May 1 at The Centre

The Bluffton Hospital Auxiliary will hold their annual volunteer recognition banquet Friday, May 1, beginning at noon at The Centre of Bluffton, 601 N. Main St., Bluffton. The awards ceremony will begin at 1:30 p.m.

At the event, auxiliary members will be recognized for their hours of volunteer service to the hospital. Overall, the Bluffton Hospital Auxiliary includes 54 volunteers who gave 9,285 hours to the hospital in 2014.

The theme of this year’s banquet is “All That Jazz.” Entertainment will be provided by the Bluffton High School Jazz Band.
