Baby, it's cold outside

With the highest temperature reading in the past seven days at 32 and the highest “low” reading at 21, there’s lots of reasons for school delays and bundling up extra tight this month.

Henry P. Huber Scholarship committee accepting applications

The Henry P. Huber Scholarship committee is currently accepting applications for the 2015-2016 school year.

Applications may be acquired from the guidance counselor at Bluffton High School, the superintendent's office in the Bluffton Elementary School and from the Citizens National Bank in Bluffton.

Applicants are required to submit with their application, whether a high school senior or currently enrolled in college, the most recent transcript of their academic program. 

Applications must be filed with the committee by May 25, 2015.

Red Cross blood drive February 5 at First Mennonite Church

A Red Cross blood drive will be held from noon to 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 5 at First Mennonite Church, 101 S. Jackson St., Bluffton.

If you wish to schedule a blood donation, please call 1-800-Red Cross or go to redcrossblood.org, sponsor code “fmenncbl.”

The Mission, Peace and Service Commission of First Mennonite helps to organize a Red Cross blood drive twice each year.

Police warn residents about phone scams

Bluffton police ask Icon viewers to be aware of a potential telephone scam taking place in the area. 

"We had a couple come into the police station today because they were contacted saying a family member needed “bail” money.  The entire incident was a hoax, and fortunately, the local residents contacted police to clear things up before anyone lost any money," Rick Skilliter, Bluffton police chief told The Icon.

Sportsmen Club annual meeting Jan. 24

Bluffton Sportsmen Club Annual Meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 24, at the Clubhouse on North Spring Street, Bluffton.  Past and future members welcomed.  An All-you-can-eat fish fry is on the agenda.

Benefit for Dukes family will take place Saturday

The benefit fundraiser for the Tom Dukes family, area resident who recently died of colon cancer will take place this weekend, according to First National Bank, who is assisting in the benefit.

A chicken barbecue with live entertainment is planned on Saturday, Jan. 10, at the Columbus Grove American Legion Post 516, 412 Plum St., Columbus Grove.

Pre-sale tickets are now on sale. Persons may dine-in or carry-out from 5 to 7 p.m. The event will also include gun raffles, live and silent auctions and a 50-50 drawing.
