Bluffton shuts out Ottawa Hills at home 2-0

Meeting between Division III 2nd and 5th state ranked teams

 BLUFFTON - The host Bluffton boys soccer team blanked Ottawa Hills 2-0 in a much-awaited showdown between the two top-ranked Div. III teams in the northwest region Thursday night at Steinmetz Field. 

Prior to the contest, Bluffton was ranked number 2 in Division III in the Ohio Scholastic Soccer Coaches Association poll. Ottawa Hills was ranked 5th.

The unbeaten Pirates improved to 9-0-1 overall with the big victory. The Green Bears fell to 4-3-1 after the defeat.

BLUFFTON - The host Bluffton volleyball team lost in straight sets to Paulding in a Northwest Conference match Thursday night. 

Bluffton fell to 9-4 overall and 2-2 in the NWC with the 25-15, 25-9, 25-18 defeat.         

Paulding improved to 9-2 overall and 2-1 in NWC play with the sweep win.     

Kylie Stackhouse led the Pirate girls with 10 kills and one block. Taylor Schwab contributed six kills and 13 digs. 

Haelynn Bischoff added three kills.

Heartland Kids Corner now on the Icon

Welcome to the Icon's newest video feature. It's called Heartland Kids Corner. 

The Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) has launched a new series, Heartland Kids Corner, featuring student athletes interviewed by the children of their coaches. 

Bluffton University is a Heartland member.

In the inaugural episode Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology cross country head coach Geoff Wayton’s son Kurt puts the Fightin’ Engineer runners in the hot seat. Student athletes interviewed included Ben Gothard, Tim Wilson, Haley Braker, Madison Lindfelt and Taryn Perry.

Bluffton falls to LCC

BLUFFTON - The Bluffton girls tennis team lost 4-1 to visiting Lima Central Catholic Wednesday evening.

The defeat dropped the Lady Pirate record to 4-11 this season.

Pirate juniors Ellie Nickel and Libby Frazier teamed up to post the lone Bluffton win at second doubles by a 6-0, 6-2 score. 

All four LCC wins were posted convincingly in straight sets.

Bluffton is scheduled to host Bryan Saturday, Sept. 26.

Bluffton girl kickers win 6th straight

MILLER CITY - The visiting Bluffton girls soccer team came from behind to defeat Miller City 2-1 in a defensive battle Wednesday evening.

The Lady Pirate kickers improved to 7-2-1 with their sixth consecutive victory. MC fell to 4-4 with the close defeat.

Wildcat Madison Ellerbrock scored the game's first goal in the fourth minute. But then the Bluffton defense buckled down and held the hosts scoreless over the final 76 minutes of play.

Pirates win NWC quad meet

BLUFFTON - The Ada and Bluffton golf squads played a makeup four-team Northwest Conference match Tuesday at the Bluffton Golf Course to finish the regular season.

Bluffton won with 166 strokes, followed by Lincolnview (178), Delphos Jefferson (185) and Ada (219).

Kenny Lovett of the Pirates was match medalist with a score of 36. Micah Minnig shot 40, and teammate Jaden Coonfare was close behind him with a 41. Jacob Boisvert rounded out the Bluffton scorers with a 49.
