Janet Campbell 1941 -2020

Janet Ruth Campbell, 79, died Oct. 19, 2020, at her residence. Janet was born Feb. 24, 1941, in Lima to the late Robert and D. Frances (White) Wellbaum. On Dec. 5, 1959, she married Richard Campbell and he survives.

Janet graduated from Bath High School, had been a homemaker and attended Rockport United Methodist Church.    

Survivors include her husband, Richard Campbell of Bluffton; a son, Scott (Barbara) Campbell of Batavia, Ohio; two granddaughters, Melissa Campbell, Sara Campbell and a sister, Judy (Michael) Tannehill of Las Cruces, New Mexico.

Karen Hilty 1944 - 2020

Karen Sue Hilty, 75, of Toledo and formerly of Pandora died Oct. 16, 2020, at University of Toledo Medical Center. Karen was born November 27, 1944, in Bluffton,  to the late Herbert and Mabel (Bucher) Hilty.   

Karen was affectionately known as "Cookie" by her many friends.  She enjoyed listening to music and was known by many for her infectious smile.  Karen had been a resident of Conteh Home Services in Toledo for many years.  

Survivors include her Conteh Home friends that were more like her family.

'73 BHS and '78 BC grad diagnosed with rare form of cancer

A Go Fund me site is now posted to assist former Bluffton resident Kriss Heiks.

She is a 1973 graduate of Bluffton High School and 1978 graduate of Bluffton College (University), now living in Boone, N.C., was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer that settled in the sinus cavity in the left side of her face.

According to Heiks, essentially the entire left side of her face was removed, including her eye, jaw and nostril.

Sophomore Erik Nygaard finishes strong 3rd in NWC meet

COLUMBUS GROVE - The Bluffton cross country team finished fourth in the annual Northwest Conference championship meet Saturday at Columbus Grove behind a top three showing.

Host CG won the boys team title with 29 points to easily out-distance second-place Lincolnview (58). Crestview nosed out Bluffton for third-place, 91-93.

Bluffton sophomore Erik Nygaard finished a strong third in a time of 16:49 to lead the 11 Pirate boys in the 85-runner field.

Stingy defense stops Bluffton in playoffs

4-3 Pirates have a bye week; travel to Cory-Rawson Oct. 30

SHERWOOD - Visiting Bluffton lost decisively to unbeaten third seed Sherwood Fairview 67-6 in the second round of the Div. VI, region 22 playoffs Saturday night.

The defeat snapped a four-game Pirate win streak, while Fairview improved to 7-0 with the win. Bluffton fell to 4-3 with the loss.

Fairview began the scoring with a safety 3:04 into the game and never was threatened.

Running back Luke Timbrook scored touchdowns on consecutive one-yard plunges in the first period.

Corn harvest time

While most of the 2020 soybeans are off the field, some farmers have also started removing corn. Here's a scene and video of the corn harvest at State Route 103 and Township Road 52, east of Bluffton from last week. Click here for a short video.
