Good time as any to review village snow emergency ordinance

BLUFFTON COUNCIL'S FINAL MEETING OF 2013 IS MONDAY, DEC. 23. THE MEETING AGENDA IS IN AN ATTACHMENT AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS STORY.

Now that Bluffton has experienced its first significant snowfall of the year, an annual
review of snow removal issues is due.

Each year the village has a small handful of residents who use their snow blowers to clear the snow from their sidewalk and driveway into the street.

Village personnel committee meets Dec. 19

The Village of Bluffton’s personnel committee will be meeting Thursday, Dec. 19, at 1 p.m.  The meeting will be at Town Hall, according to Nancy Kindle, village fiscal officer.

School board will act on renewal of five-year levy on Monday

Bluffton school board will act upon a renewal of a five-year tax levy during its December meeting on Monday.

The five-year levy was first passed in 1999, renewed in 2004 and again in 2009. The board anticipates it being placed on the May 6, 2014 ballot.

2014 Village of Bluffton general fund tops $3.5 million

The Village of Bluffton will operate with a 2014 general fund budget of $3,525,454. Bluffton’s council approved the budget on Monday. The budget includes excess reserves of $1,192,371, which provides the village with an approximate six-month reserve.

Nancy Kindle, village fiscal officer, told council members that village income tax revenue in 2013 was higher than expected. She added that revenues in the water and sewer improvement fund were able to payback approximately $250,000 into the general fund.

Two new officers join Bluffton's Police Department bringing FT staff to eight

Bluffton council hired two full-time police officers on Monday. With the new officers the department now had eight full-time officers, according to Rick Skilliter, police chief.

The two are Hope Hannah and Abigail Michael. Hannah has six years part-time experience with the Bluffton department. Michel has worked part-time for one year with the department.

They officially join the force on Jan. 5, 2014. Their pay is $13 an hour. Other members of the department are Matt Oglesbee and Ryan Burkholder, both sergeants, Tyler Hostettler, Chad Cupples, Lonny Kent and Skilliter.

Board will act on seven student teacher assignments on Monday

Several students teacher assignments will be acted upon at Monday’s November school board meeting, according to Greg Denecker, superintendent.

Those include the following Ohio Northern University students from Jan. 21 through May 2:
• Kayle Gorenfio, with Dave Sycks
• Spencer Genson with Kevin King,
• Blade Tacket with Pamela Riffle
• Tony Rader with Scott Huff
• Hillard Crawford with Jackie Bourassa
