Bluffton cruises to wins over Illinois and Beloit on opening day

The Bluffton University softball team blew open the doors on its 2013 season with an 8-0 mercy-run victory over Illinois College and a 9-4 win over Beloit College on Sunday, March 3, at the Rebel Spring Games. Bluffton's offense hit .423 for the day and pounded three dingers in the five-inning pasting of the Illinois Lady Blues.

Lola Basinger was a camp nurse in Civilian Public Service in WWII

Lola May Basinger, 96 died at 1:20 p.m. March 3, 2013 at Willow Ridge, Bluffton. She was born Sept. 27, 1916, in Roanoke, Illinois, to the late Rudolph and Matilda (Stalter) Schertz. 

On July 8, 1948, she married L. Eugene Basinger and he died July 1, 2011. 

She retired from Lima Convalescent Home as a registered nurse.  She had also nursed in Chicago, Washington, D.C., Virginia and Ohio.  She served as a camp nurse Civilian Public Service in World War II, which is where she met her husband, Gene.

It's on the way

A complex winter storm will impact AEP's Eastern Utilities Tuesday and Wednesday, according to a news release from AEP. A light mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain (less than 0.10" ice) will reach I&M Power tonight, followed by steady wet snow on Tuesday and Tuesday night for I&M Power and northern Ohio.  Expect 4-6 inches of snow accumulations from South Bend and Ft. Wayne to Lima-Mansfield-Canton-Wheeling.

Martyr stories still real, relevant

Martyrs aren’t just a thing from the distant past, Dr. John D. Roth maintains, and more recent stories of martyrdom—like those of long-ago Christians who suffered for their faith—should be told.

The Goshen College history professor related figures and other factors behind his dual assertion on Feb. 26 in the annual C. Henry Smith Peace Lecture at Bluffton University.

Project management

Ohio Northern University student Meghan Letizia helps Bluffton fourth graders Calloway Luke, Nicholas Jebsen, Skylar Liddick and Becca Gallant in a STEM activity on Feb. 28. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. Bluffton resident, Dr. David Mikesell, a member of the ONU engineering faculty, led the day-long event that created lots of excitment for the students. Click for a video.

What year did you graduate from Bluffton High School and where did you live in Bluffton? 
I'm a member of the BHS class of 1963 and I grew up at 113 E. Elm St.

You must have attended elementary in the old grade school building. What do you remember from that building?
