Direct primary care discussion

Dr. Sam Heiks, M.D., (left) of Bluffton is the 8:30 p.m., Thursday evening guest on WBGU TV's "Northwest Ohio Journal." The 30-minute program, with host Steve Kendall, will focus on direct primary care medicine. Dr. Heiks of Creekside Medicine Medicine has a primary care medicine practice. The program was taped last week.

Collier, Basinger in Van Wert Civic Theatre "Big River" production

The Van Wert Civic Theatre is presenting the Tony Award winning musical Big River, a country and bluegrass musical adaptation of Mark Twain's classic 1884 novel "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn".

The show is directed by Jerry  Zimmerman and features two Bluffton dramatists, Everett Collier and Dan Basinger.

Everett Collier is performing in the role of Big Jim, the runaway slave who encounters Huck while seeking his own freedom.

Dan Basinger plays Pap Finn, Huck's drunk and violent father and the catalyst behind Huck's own journey.

Vera Higgins, 1918 - 2013

Vera A. Higgins, 94 died at 7:05 am January 27, 2013 at Mennonite Memorial Home, Bluffton. 

She was born November 19, 1918 in Ada to the late James A. and Freda (Frankhauser) Hauenstein. 

On August 9, 1940 she married Herbert Higgins and he died July 8, 2005. Vera was a homemaker and was a member of Central Christian Church, Lima.

Film festival set in Bluffton University

Bluffton University’s Institute for Learning in Retirement, an educational program for retirees, will host its second annual film festival, featuring “Families in Foreign Films,” from March 5 - 8.

One movie will be shown each day in 114 Centennial Hall, beginning with a film review at 9 a.m.

Following the films will be discussions over lunch, which participants should bring. Cost for the festival is $3 per session or $9 for all four sessions.

Registration is requested by March 1, but walk-ins are welcome.

Bluffton senior’s recital to feature his music

Saxophonist Scott Troyer will present his Bluffton University senior recital—including two of his compositions—at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 3, in Yoder Recital Hall.

The recital is free and open to the public; a reception will follow in the lobby.

Troyer, from Sugarcreek, Ohio, will perform six numbers on alto and soprano saxophone, including his “Polyphony for Saxophone Trio” and “A Prayer (Through every minute).” Joining him in the saxophone trio will be Dr. Adam Schattschneider, a professor of music and Troyer’s instructor, and Bluffton junior Chelsey Parker.
