22 anglers snagged prizes in 80th Bluffton Trout Derby

$1,124 prize awarded in 50/50 raffle

Trout No. 1 lived to swim another day despite the best efforts of anglers of all experience levels at the May 4 Bluffton Trout Derby, the 80th event of its kind. In total 22 tagged trout were caught by anglers from Ada, Bellefontaine, Benton Ridge, Bluffton, Columbus, Columbus Grove, Delphos, Findlay, Mt. Cory, Ottawa, Pandora and Rawson.

The event hosted by the Bluffton Sportsmen’s Club kicked off the fishing season at Buckeye Lake, where members can fish without a state fishing license. Memberships are available at the Dough Hook, Kibbee's Craft Beer, Wine & Deli, TNT Firearms and Ted’s Market.

The winner of the 50/50 drawing, Cory Glick, took home the biggest prize of $1,125.00. Prizes in the $1 raffle were two beef quarters, winners Dan Schaller and Diane Lovjoy; $200, Jean Rule; $100, Ron Koontz; $75, Betty Dicke; $50, Tim Tussing; and $25, Raquel Gonzales. Mike Ellerbrock won the gun raffle.

More volunteers needed to count use on more pathways

With two new pathways--on SR 103 and County Line Rd.--the Bluffton Lions are seeking volunteers to spend 2 hours counting bike and pedestrian traffic through the end of next week. Volunteers can choose an area to monitor and the day and time of day. Counts  play an important role in grant applications. To volunteer, email [email protected], or text or call 419-905-6876.

Michael Chanda Kingsley was a chef

Michael Chanda Kingsley, 42, passed away at his home in Bluffton, Ohio, on Monday evening, May 6, 2024. Mike was born on September 8, 1981, in Lusaka, Zambia.

Cynthia Slaughterbeck was a nurse

Cynthia Slaughterbeck, Age 67, of Bradenton, Fla., passed away at Traditions of Lebanon in Lebanon, Ohio, on Sunday, May 5, 2024 following an extended illness.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Steve Slaughterbeck, father, Ned Kress and brother, Brad Kress. She was a 1974 Graduate of Franklin-Monroe High School.

She had a heart to serve and did so as a nurse for over 30 years both in Ohio and in Florida. She was very active in promoting and playing shuffleboard. She served as the President of the Florida Shuffleboard Association’s Southwest District.

Pirate softball bombs O-G in sectionals

OTTAWA __ The visiting Bluffton High School softball team crushed Ottawa-Glandorf 16-1 in first round sectional Div. III action Wednesday, May 8.

The Pirate girls improved to 2-7 with the big win. Bluffton advanced to the sectional finals against top seed Parkway (18-3) Friday at 5:00 p.m.

The sectional winner goes on to the Lima Bath district.

O-G fell to 2-19 with the defeat.

The Pirates jumped on top 5-1 after two innings. Bluffton then scored 10 runs in the top of the third inning to break the game open and win the five-inning contest.

Emma Green smacked a double, stroked two singles and had two runs batted in. She also scored two runs.

Bluffton Soccer Club travel team tryouts, May 28-29

Think your player might be ready for travel soccer? Bluffton Soccer Club travel team tryouts for girls and boys entering grades 2-8 will be held on May 28-29 at the Citizen National Bank fields, at the end of Citizen Parkway.
