Friends of the Library Book Sale, May 16-18

The Friends of the Bluffton Public Library are hosting a book sale from May 16-18 on the library’s lower level at 145 S. Main. Sale proceeds benefit library services, materials, and programs. Your purchase at this sale goes to enriching Bluffton and the surrounding community.

SCHEDULE

  • Thurs., May 16: 9:30 a.m. to 7:15 p.m.
  • Fri., May 17: 9:30 a.m. to 4:45 p.m.
  • Sat., May 18: 9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

ABOUT THE FRIENDS

The Bluffton Public Library is a vital resource in our community. Therefore, the Friends encourage everyone who uses the library’s services to make a donation and to share their time, energy, and ideas.

Fly Me to the Moon: Selenium and Health

Kaye Ballard sang the 1954 song In Other Words, which was the original version for Frank Sinatra’s 1964 Fly Me to the Moon. Bart Howard–who wrote the song–estimated by the time Sinatra released his, at least 100 versions had been recorded. 

Speaking of the moon!  The chemical element selenium was named for the Greek Goddess of the moon known as Selene.  Selenium is a critical micronutrient for health, but it has some side effects when taken in large quantities.

If your travels don't take you near Sunset Drive because it's a no outlet street, think again. It now takes you to Chestnut Lane and a new residential development in Bluffton. Here's a snap of progress in May 2024.

Design competition announced for new shrine at Indian Lake

RUSSELLS POINT,__ The Our Lady of Fatima Shrine was destroyed by the powerful EF-3 tornado that hit Indian Lake on March 14. The property owner, The American Society of Ephesus (ASE), is now partnering with ArtSpace Lima to conduct a design competition to rebuild the shrine.

Pieces of the nearly 20-foot tall statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary were found in the lake over two weeks later by a team of volunteer divers..The remnants of the shrine pedestal were demolished for safety reasons.”We immediately had requests from the local community to build it back, and there was never any question about it, we will rebuild the shrine," said Bill Quatman, president of the nonprofit corporation.

Funeral arrangements for Ruth Hohenbrink are pending

Ruth Hohenbrink, 94, of Bluffton, died May 13, 2024, at St. Rita’s Medical Center.

Chiles-Laman Funeral & Cremation Services of Bluffton is assisting the family with arrangements.
