Bluffton schools accepting open enrollment applications for 2013-14

The Bluffton Exempted Village School District is currently accepting applications from students interested in attending the school district through open enrollment for the 2013 –2014 school year.

Students from any school district in Ohio may apply and enroll in Bluffton Schools tuition free. Students are admitted on a full-time basis only.

Applications are approved annually on a first come, first served basis and approval is subject to grade level enrollment and educational programs.

Ward Guinther was a U.S. Army veteran

Ward F. Guinther, 57 died at 1:42 p.m. March 26, 2013. at his residence surrounded by his family following a seven month battle with cancer.  He was born April 15, 1955, in Sturgis, Michigan, to the late Jack and Betty (Gill) Guinther.  On May 13, 1999 he married Charity L. Michel who survives.

Mr. Guinther  was an over the road truck driver most recently for Woods Brothers Trucking. Ward was an U.S. Army veteran.

Here's a photo from the 1961 Bluffton Centennial "children's parade." Leland Gerber took the photo. Any idea on who the astronaut behind the shades, beard and football helmet might be? We are trying to figure out how this float entry is propelled. Is it a garden tractor?

"The Croods" starts Friday at Shannon Theatre

"The Croods" (PG), an animated comedy, will premier in Bluffton starting Friday, March 29 and running through Thursday, April 4.

Show times are every evening at 7 p.m. and  9:30 p.m. with matinees on BOTH Friday and Saturday at 1:30 p.m. and  4 p.m.. (All shows are in 2D).

There will be no Sunday afternoon shows due to Easter but both evening shows will run as planned.

Shirley's Gourmet Popcorn flavor of the month for April is Raspberry Truffle!

Hickory, dickory, that's an expensive repair job

Have you glanced at the Bluffton town hall clock tower recently? There’s some shingles missing. A repair job is on the way, but it won't be a cheap fix.

Jamie Mehaffie, village administrator, informed Bluffton council members on Monday that he has received one estimate for the repair. The estimate is $17,500.

Mehaffie says that the tower roof leaks and that’s why the clock, from time to time, doesn't keep time correctly. The shingles that are loose are not part of the town hall renovation. That roof work was part of an earlier fixup.

Bluffton's four-year-old bowler

He's the youngest bowler ever to work the alley at Southgate Lanes, Bluffton. He's T.J. Henning, four years old. The Icon caught up with T.J. during Saturday's junior bowling awards event. T.J. attends Bluffton Community Pre-school and is the son of Timothy and Desiree Henning. Want to watch him bowl? Click here.
