Chloe Shell fires four-hitter in game two win over Pioneers

The Bluffton University softball team split a doubleheader with Transylvania University on Saturday, March 23, 2013. The Beavers lost the first game, 10-4, but turned it around in the second game for a 3-1 victory.

The Beavers moved to 9-7 overall and 1-1 in the Heartland Conference, while Transylvania University is now 3-13 overall and 1-1 in the HCAC.

Someone call Mother Nature

Someone tell Mother Nature that spring has sprung. Needless to say, the snow keeps falling on March 25. Bluffton schools are cancelled and several other events delayed or postponed.

Owen’s parents, Chad and Melissa Weaver,  are trying to obtain a wheelchair van. As part of Mobility Awareness Month, three such vans will be given away. Owen’s parents have a chance to win one of the three because Owen was selected to participate in the van project.

Richland Manor offers cash prizes for its pie contest winners

Richland Manor, 7400 Swaney Road, invites all pie bakers to enter its April pie baking contest. Three cash prizes will be awards.  Contest pie divisions follow:
• Berry pie
• Cream pie
• Miscellaneous pie

Winners in each division receive a $40 Visa gift card. The contest will take place at 6:30 p.m., Friday, April 18, and is open to the public. Persons wanting to submit pies to be judged must complete and submit an entry form by Saturday, April 12.

100 years ago this weekend in Bluffton

Here's a photo of the 1913 Bluffton flood, which occurred between March 23 and 27, 1913. The flood was much wider than the Riley, as many streams across Ohio flooded.

The Feb. 28, 2011, flood was devastating, but imagine cleaning up after the 1913 flood. Here's a photo of that flood taken on Cherry Street. The building on the very far left houses the Village Cut 'n' Curl today.

Here's a look at the sidewalk ordinance coming to Bluffton

Remember the sidewalk repair program of about 10 years ago? It's coming back. Bluffton council anticipates acting on the first of three readings on a new ordinance to address sidewalks not addresses in the first round.

The action is on Monday's council agenda. A complete look at the ordinance is part of an attachment at the bottom of this story.

The new ordinance has three phases:
• Existing sidewalk repair
• Construction and installation of connecting sidewalks
• Construction and installation of new sidewalks
