BFR expands sports training this summer

Area middle school and high school athletes have a new option for refining sport skills and staying in condition over the summer. 

BFR Sports and Fitness has changed the format of the Jumpstart program to include both physical conditioning and sport-related drills. Jumpstart is a good companion to “open gym” sessions provided by high schools since the Jumpstart program will be focused on conditioning and form. 

VBS season is next on the summer calendar

Vacation Bible School season is almost upon us. Here in the list of VBS in the Icon viewership area:

Four shuffleboard tournaments in Bluffton this summer

Bluffton's shuffleboard court will be busy this summer. Morris Groman of the local club provided The Icon with the schedule of tournaments. Those follow:

• May 30-31-June 1: Mildred and Clarence Brunn Doubles - open to any doubles team
• June 6-7-8: North American Singles - open to men and women, singles play
• July 11-12-13: Crowe Memorial Doubles - open to any doubles team
• Aug. 15-16-17: Bluffton Doubles - open to any doubles team

Special board meeting to interview MS candidates May 23

The Bluffton Exempted Village Board of Education has set a special board meeting for Thursday, May 23, at 7 p.m. in the Superintendent’s Office to interview middle school principal candidates.

Bluffton HS senior music awards presented

Bluffton High School senior music awards were presented on May 21 during an evening awards program.

Robert Barnett, Gene Long, recognized by Lions

Two members of the Bluffton Lions Club were honored recently. The Melvin Jones Fellowships were presented to  Robert Barnett and Gene Long at the May 7 club meeting.

This is the highest award that a Lion can receive and is presented as recognition of humanitarian work done. Barnett recently received recognition as a 50 year member. Long has been a Lion since 1976.

Maple Crest taking reservations for Sunday buffet

The next Maple Crest Senior Living, Bluffton, Sunday buffet is May 26, according to Daren Lee, director of Maple Crest.

The menu includes:
• Country fried steak with gravy
• Baked tilapia with mango salsa
• Mashed potatoes
• Maple glazed baby carrots
• Dinner rolls
• Peach pie
• coffee and iced tea.

The buffet is in the Patio Room at Maple Crest from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. It is open to all adults 55 and older at a cost of $7.50 per person.

Red Cross offers ways to help those affected by the Oklahoma tornado

The American Red Cross of Hancock, Seneca and Wyandot Counties offers their thoughts and concern to everyone in Oklahoma following the horrific tornado early this week. We are working around the clock to provide food and shelter to all those whose lives were affected by these storms.

Red Cross disaster services volunteers and staff throughout the country are responding to the area, assessing damages, providing food and supplies to first responders, and support to the people affected by the storm.

Marilyn Creps was a retired LPN at Bluffton Hospital

Marilyn A. Creps, age 80, died on Tuesday, May 21, 2013 at 10:17 am at Lima Memorial Health System, Lima.

She was born on June 16, 1932 in Findlay, Ohio to Carl D. and Evelyn (Clapper) Gallant, they preceded her in death. On September 4, 1954 she married Gene E. Creps and he preceded her in death on August 14, 2002.

Marilyn retired after working for approximately 50 years at the Bluffton Hospital as a Licensed Practical Nurse. She later worked for the Allen County Sheriff's Jail. She was a member of the Riley Creek Baptist Church, Bluffton.

Richard Potter speaker at May 27 Bluffton Memorial Day ceremony

Bluffton's traditional Memorial Day parade and ceremony at Maple Grove Cemetery takes place Monday, May 27, according to John Wagner, commander of the Bluffton American Legion Post 382.

The parade starts at the Bluffton town hall at 9:30 a.m. Those who would like to participate in the parade are asked to be at the town hall at 9:15 a.m.

The Bluffton American Legion Post # 382 Honor Guard will lead the parade followed by the Bluffton High School Band.

Wagner said, "We ask that all citizens please remove their caps to show respect for the American flag."
