September 2021 weather began with remarkably beautiful days, as shown by a summary of week 1 from Guy Verhoff, Pandora weather observer.

Bluffton boys CC 3rd at Grove Invitational

The Bluffton cross country teams competed at the Columbus Grove Invitational Saturday morning, September 4.

BOYS COMPETITION

Botkins won the boys 18-team Red Division team title with 48 points. Lincolnview was second (69), followed by Bluffton in a solid third-place showing (155).

Junior Landon Armstrong posted the top Pirate finish. He came in fifth among 104 runners in 17 minutes.

Bluffton junior Sam Derstine finished 25th, and senior Trey Boblitt ended up 30th. Rounding out the Pirate scorers were Jonah Rehm (44th) and John Yoder (51st).

Bluffton girls best Coldwater

The visiting Bluffton girls soccer team bested Coldwater 4-1 Saturday afternoon.

The Lady Pirate kickers improved to 3-2 after the convincing non-conference victory. The Lady Cavaliers fell to 4-2 with the defeat.

Ella Armstrong scored in the 19th and 36th minutes to give the Pirates a 2-0 halftime lead. Kendal Giesige assisted the first goal.

Sami Scoles extended the lead to 3-0 with a score in the 44th minute. Makayla Schweingruber added the final Pirate goal in the 61st minute.

Allison Diller dished out assists on the second and third Pirate goals.

September 4 split for University netters

The Bluffton University volleyball team rebounded from a Saturday morning sweep at the hands of Ohio Wesleyan by slicing through Trine in four sets in the afternoon. Bluffton improved to 2-2 on the season with the September 4 split.

Ohio Wesleyan was too much, rolling to a sweep of the Beavers thanks to scores of 25-16, 25-18 and 25-21. Senior Cassidy Posey (Paulding) led the home squad with 10 kills and three blocks. Junior Maddie White (Ashland) doled out 16 assists, while Kia Rainey (Adrian, MI/Madison) picked up eight digs against the Battling Bishops.

University football opener, 24-6 Alma

The Bluffton University football team made the long trip to Alma College for the 2021 season opener on Saturday, September 4. Four interceptions and a fumble paved the way for a 24-6 Alma victory as the Beavers were back on the field just over four months after wrapping up their 2020-21 campaign.

Annual Quarry Farm Jam September 11

Music of all kinds will fill the air from 6 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, September 11 as The Quarry Farm Nature Preserve & Conservation Farm, Pandora, hosts the organization's annual Jam.

Organizers note: "Whether you play an instrument like a virtuoso or just like to pretend, sing along or listen, people of all ages are invited to this family-friendly event. Bring a lawn chair and spend a sweet late summer evening with music under the outdoor pavilion's big red roof, alongside the calls from the nature preserve."
