The Barberettes packed the house at Maple Crest on Dec. 14 for their grand finale Christmas performance of the season. 

Led by pianist Jayne McGarrity, the 20-woman chorus delighted their audience with a wonderful mixture of sacred and secular Christmas favorites. 

 

Robert and Mary Barnett of Bluffton, will celebrate 70 years of marriage Dec. 24, 2012, with a family celebration. 

Robert and the former Mary Marshall were married in 1942 in San Antonio, Texas, where Robert was stationed with the Army Air Corps.

They are the parents of three children:  David (Marilyn) Barnett of Albany, N.Y., Jayne (Dick) McGarrity of Bluffton and Jim (Nancy) Barnett of Syracuse, N.Y.  They have nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. 

Icon viewers: The following letter is from Jamie Mehaffie, village administrator. It was sent to the Bluffton Area Chamber of Commerce to address questions from Main Street merchants about snow removal in the downtown area.

The letter was e-mailed to chamber members and it posted here for general information for village residents concerning snow removal.

Nathan Sommer, a Bluffton native and Ph.D. student at the University of Cincinnati, will explore the evolution of the human-computer relationship in a Bluffton University Forum at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 8, in Founders Hall. The presentation, titled “Teaching Our Machines,” is free and open to the public.

Sommer, whose research currently focuses on musical applications of machine learning, will discuss how machine learning is entering our lives and what we are teaching—and attempting to teach—our computers.

The chorus for Bluffton University’s spring-semester Masterworks Concert—the former Bach Festival Concert—will rehearse at 7 p.m. Tuesdays, beginning Jan. 8, in the Gilliom Room of Mosiman Hall.

Rehearsals will culminate with the Bluffton Choral Society’s concert performance of “Requiem,” by Florian Leopold Gassmann, at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 24, in Yoder Recital Hall.

Singers from high school through adults are encouraged to join the choral society, which will be conducted by Dr. Mark J. Suderman, professor of music at Bluffton.
