A chicken barbecue dinner is planned during this summer’s Bluffton Area Relay for Life.

The chicken barbecue is from 4:30-6:30 p.m., Friday, June 20, at the Bluffton University football field. Enter the Augsburger Road entrance; eat in or dine out.

Cost is $8 for one-half chicken, two sides and a roll. Henry’s of Ottawa is the caterer. Tickets are on sale at Village Cut n’ Curl, Polished or by called Best at 419-358-5858.

Bluffton University students, alumni and friends gathered for the university’s annual May Day and commencement festivities, May 3 and 4. The institution’s 114th commencement ceremony, held on May 4, recognized 260 graduates. Presenting “Valuing Education” was this year’s commencement speaker, David J. Berger, mayor of Lima.

The local graduates, all of Bluffton, are:

• Marlena Ballinger, bachelor of arts (BA) degree in organizational 

• Jonathan Bassett, master’s degree in business administration (MBA)

• Becky Foust, BA in social work

Bluffton High School won the Northwest Conference 2013-14 “Don Bachman Award of Excellence” for the first time with a strong finish in the spring sports season. 

This award recognizes the school in the conference that exhibits the highest level of consistent excellence in conference-sponsored sports and scholastic bowl competition.

The Pirates compiled a total of 80.5 points to defeat Crestview (79) in a close race. Columbus Grove finished third with 70 points. For the first time in the history of the award all league schools had at least one championship/co-championship.

Actually, meet the Bluffton Child Development Center pre-kindergarten graduating class of 2014. Jump ahead 13 school years and it's suddenly the year 2027.

Graduation ceremonies were May 22 at Bluffton Baptist Church. During the graduation program members of the class sang "Hakuna Matata," from Disney's Lion King. They recited the graduation poem, watched a slide show, held the graduation ceremony and concluded with a dance recital.
