The winner of Week 8 of The Icon Football Contest is Brandon Huber . He and Jim Dillman, John Schmutz and Dennis Edinger correctly picked 14 games this week and no contestant predicted either tie-breaker correctly. Huber's entry was the first received.

Marcene S. Martz, 89, of Bluffton died Oct. 19, 2013 in Mesquite, Texas.  She was born May 14, 1924, in Hancock County to Swan D. and Harriet Ewing Stonehill. On Oct. 20, 1946 she married Donald Martz and he preceded her in death on Dec. 12, 2001.

She retired from Ex-Cell-O Corp., Bluffton where she was a receptionist. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, Bluffton where she had served as secretary of the church board, sang in the choir and was a member of United Methodist Women.

The U-10 Bluffton Galaxy girls soccer team took first place at the Van Buren Fall Classic held on Oct. 12-13. They went 4-0 in their pool with a combined score of 38-4 over the 4 games.  They ended the season with a 12-0 record.

Marion Blumenthal Lazan will share “Four Perfect Pebbles—My Holocaust Story” at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 29, in Bluffton University’s Founders Hall. The campus forum is free and open to the public.

The author of a memoir also titled “Four Perfect Pebbles,” Lazan will recall her family’s life during the Holocaust, from events preceding Kristallnacht—the November 1938 attacks on Jewish synagogues and businesses in Nazi Germany—to imprisonment in concentration camps and, finally, to liberation.

We met up with Jacob Suter in late September at Southgate Lanes. He was working the crowd, persuading them to vote for the Shirley’s Popcorn bowling team during a chamber fundraiser. We caved and voted for them. Here’s part of our conversation with Jacob.

Mr. Brinkman.

What time do you get on the bus in the morning?
Between 7:20 and 7:25.
