Minutes away from becoming Bluffton University graduates on May 5, 279 students were reminded that they have another test.

“That test is called ‘the rest of your life,’” said Dr. J. Denny Weaver, a professor emeritus of religion at Bluffton and the speaker at the university’s 113th annual commencement ceremony.

The test is “how well you invest the education you have acquired,” he said, urging the graduates to do so by helping bend the moral arc that the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. said is long but “bends toward justice.”

Abigail Graber (center, with red and yellow trim) was part of a “legacy” couple added to Bluffton University’s traditional Maypole dance for May Day festivities on May 4. Graber, from Goshen, Ind., and her partner, Justin Neufeld Weaver of Bluffton, each with longstanding family ties to the university, formed a ninth couple for the 100th edition of the dance with which Bluffton alumni are familiar.

Celebrates spring with its 42nd annual downtown arts and crafts show on Saturday, May 12. The Bluffton Area Chamber of Commerce event features over 70 vendors all on Main Street. Show hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. There is no admission charge.

According to Fred Steiner, chamber CEO, this is the largest show in several years. It should attract several hundred persons. “The show is designed as a family event. It’s free and offers activities for all age groups,” he said.

 

Want to try your hand at basket weaving? Bluffton Public Library will host a basket weaving class as part of the “DIG in DIY” Adult Summer Program Series. From 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 8, instructor Teresa Margraf will teach participants how to make a multi-purpose, square basket with a handle.

All necessary weaving supplies and tools will be provided. A choice of two colors will be available to weave into the pattern of the basket.
