Note: Bluffton sixth graders in the 1953-54 school year (graduating class of 1960) created a booklet titled "The Bluffton Story." The following article is part of that booklet, which is now in the history collection at the Bluffton Public Library. This series continues each week on the Icon. It is common knowledge that smoking cigarettes and drinking alcohol can be harmful for an unborn baby. Unfortunately, many people do not realize how dangerous marijuana use can be to a pregnant mother and her baby as well.
Although marijuana is now legal in many states, it does not mean it is safe to use during pregnancy.
English Lutheran Church, Bluffton, invite the community to a benefit taco bar meal for the Dakota Dunn family, Sunday, May 5, from noon to 2 p.m. in the church fellowship hall.
Dakota Dunn is being treated for brain cancer. He is married to Emily (a Bluffton High School graduate, and daughter of Brad and Chris Setzer of Bluffton), and they have a son, Cooper.
All donations received at the benefit meal will help the family with medical bills.
English Lutheran Church, 111 Grove St., has accessible parking off of South Jackson Street.
As this year's graduation fast approaches, the Icon looks to past valedictorians of Bluffton High School to inspire this year's graduates as they set sail on adventures unknown.
Interestingly, a few valedictorians, such as Brigitte Herr, came back to BHS as teachers. She's known now as Brigette Hoff (or Mrs. Hoff to students).
Brigette (Herr) Hoff is a valedictorian of the class of 1986.

Wanda Stopher loves a big project, so the concept of sewing 60 comforters in 2½ years – as a way to mark her 60th birthday – didn’t feel overly daunting. With more than adequate sewing skills and a background in project management, she knew how to make a plan.

Stopher first contemplated her 60/60 project when a friend told her about Karen Kreider Yoder, who had completed a similar project in honor of her own 60th birthday.

The Bluffton University track and field team took home some significant hardware when the All-Heartland Conference outdoor awards were handed out on Thursday, May 2.
The lone conference champion for the Beavers was senior Jennie Matteson (Guysville/Alexander) who defended her title at 10,000 meters on Friday night with a final time of 40:49.02 en route to First Team All-Heartland Conference.
There are times when you just have to get out of town.
If you noticed a scant posting of stories over the past seven days there's a reason: The Icon editor flew the coop.
Headed west on U.S. 30 to Homewood, Illinois, to visit Rudi (brother) and Cheryl Steiner. Then took the toll road to Shorewood, Wisconsin, to visit Mary (sister) and Guy Lord.
While in Wisconsin, visited the Milwaukee Museum of Art and stopped briefly at the Roy Lichenstein shrine (see photo). Don't know who broke her heart, but we are confident that she'll eventually get over it.
