Some accounts received duplicate bills in February

The Village of Bluffton is notifying its utility customers of a duplicate utility billing error.

"Recent upgrades to the billing software used by the village has resulted in certain accounts receiving duplicate bills due in February," Jesse Blackburn, village administrator, told the Icon.

"This issue is being resolved by our software provider. We apologize for this situation and appreciate your understanding as we work through this transition," he added.

Greg Denecker: "Originally the bond was approved to last until 2023, but due to refinancing in 2005 and 2014, we are paying off the building early at lower rates" 

Greg Denecker, Bluffton school superintendent, informed the Icon that the 1996 bond for the construction of Bluffton Middle School building will be paid off in December.

“Originally, the bond was approved to last until 2023, but due to refinancing in 2005 and 2014, we are paying off the building early at lower rates,” he said. 

During the 2020 calendar year, the bond was taxing properties in the school district at 2.9 mills.

K-12 schools whose staff can be vaccinated next week have been notified. All other schools will be contacted shortly with information on when their K-12 staff will be permitted to receive a vaccine

Bluffton school staff is on the list for eligible school personnel in Ohio to begin receiving vaccines in Week 1 (next week), according to an announcement from the governor’s office.

According to the announcement, every public school district in the state - except for one - has agreed to resume in-person schooling by March 1, which was a requirement for staff to have early access to the vaccine.

James Pannabecker remembers: In Kindergarten, some of us went to Crow's because they were giving away free balloons.

When we returned, Miss Groman asked everyone who went to Crow's to stand up. I didn't stand, but went to Crow's. Everyone who stood up received a spanking.

1960 graduate of Bluffton High School

Morgan Allen Davies, 78, of Bluffton, died Jan. 28, 2021 at his residence. Morgan was born Jan. 29, 1942, in Bluffton to the late Richard and Vernice (McElroy) Davies. On May 30, 1963, he married Patsy Caruso who preceded him in death on May 1, 2020.

Morgan was a 1960 graduate of Bluffton High School. He worked at and retired from Tower Automotive in Bluffton. Morgan served in the United States Army and was a member of the American Legion Post #382, Bluffton. 

Numbers that everyone deserves to know

Climate change is an issue that needs to be addressed with alacrity.

We need honest debate about climate change to yield the best result for everyone. The best way to do this is to use science and facts.

I have faith in humanity. I believe that when people know better, they do better. It is the fault of many politicians and media that we are not exposed to the facts about climate change.

Morgan A. Davies, 78, of Bluffton died on Jan. 28, 2021, at his residence. Services will be at  p.m., Monday, Feb. 1, at Chiles-Laman Funeral & Cremation Services – Bluffton. 

Visitation will be Sunday from 2 – 4 p.m. and one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
