Bluffton's "Big Bird," the grey heron (Ardea cinerea), doesn't have a membership with the Bluffton Sportsmen's Club, but it fishes in the Buckeye anyway. On Sunday two herons were fishing along the north bank. Here's one of them.

Maple Crest Senior Living Community, Bluffton, hosts a fall pie-baking contest, according to Darin Lee of Maple Crest. The contest is Friday, Nov. 1. Persons interested in entering must register by Tuesday, Oct. 29.
Contestants may enter as many different pies as they wish. The contest has three categories: cream, fruit, and nut pies.
