BLUFFTON__The Bluffton High School boys soccer team lost 3-1 to visiting Shawnee in the season and home opener at Steinmetz Field on Saturday evening, August 16.
The match was tied 1-1 at the half, but Shawnee scored two goals in the final 10 minutes to break the tie and win.
The Pirate boys start the season 0-1, while the Indians open 1-0.
Shawnee’s Connor Hoops scored the first goal in the 19th minute.
Bluffton’s Carter Steinmetz knotted it 1-1 in the 30th minute to even it up before intermission.
AUGUST 14 MEDIA RELEASE — Bluffton University is honored to be the recipient of a $500,000 grant payable over the next five years. The grant is provided by The Austin E. Knowlton Foundation. These funds will be in addition to the two $4,000 annual Austin E. Knowlton Memorial Scholarships Bluffton already awards and will provide an added $100,000 of yearly support to Bluffton students interested in STEM and related fields.
The Village of Bluffton is preparing to return tree lawns on Elm St. between Lawn and Spring streets. The block is adjacent to St. Mary Catholic Church and three residential properties. The project will remove some 7-8 parking spots and make the sidewalks ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) compliant. Bids will be received until Thursday, August 21.
The Bluffton School Board will meet an hour earlier that usual, at 4:00 p.m., on Monday, August 16. The meeting agenda is attached HERE.
The agenda includes involvement of visitors, treasurer's transactions, contracts, administrative reports and an Apollo report. It also includes Plans for Turf Playground/Athletic/Band Practice Area.
This is the first public presentation of the practice field project to the School Board. The purchase of two residential properties and demolition of the homes were approved by the board.
Superintendent Greg Denecker provided information on the project in the BEVS Summer Newsletter, which appeared HERE on the Icon.
The school board meets monthly in the Bluffton Elementary School Media Center, 102 S. Jackson St.
FREMONT__The Bluffton High School boys golf team finished a solid third in the 10-team St. Joseph Central Catholic Invitational at Sycamore Hills Golf Club on Friday, August 15.
Sandusky Perkins won the tournament with 323 strokes. St. Mary Central Catholic ended up second (331), just two shots ahead of Bluffton (333).
Delta was fourth at 335, followed closely by Tiffin Calvert (337) among the closely bunched top five.
Blake Finneran of SMCC was tournament medalist with an 18-hole round of 70.
